The deadly, drug-resistant superbug Candidozyma auris has been found on healthcare workers' medical gloves and gowns.

A new study published in Open Forum Infectious Diseases has exposed a critical gap in hospital biosecurity, revealing that the multidrug-resistant yeast Candidozyma auris (formerly Candida auris) routinely hitches a ride on healthcare workers.

Researchers found that during routine care, the fungus successfully transfers to the gloves or gowns of medical staff in 29% of all patient interactions. This alarmingly high transmission rate is nearly double that of MRSA (16%) and triple that of other drug-resistant bacteria (10%), highlighting how aggressively this particular superbug spreads within clinical environments.

The threat of Candidozyma auris is particularly severe because the yeast can cause life-threatening invasive infections with mortality rates climbing as high as 62%.

The study, which observed over 1,000 interactions, found that physical contact with patients tripled the likelihood of transmission compared to touching surrounding surfaces alone. Healthcare leaders are calling for immediate action, emphasizing that strict compliance with personal protective equipment (PPE) protocols and enhanced hand hygiene are the only defenses against the rapid, silent spread of this resilient pathogen.

Japan's number of centenarians tops 100,000.

The country’s health ministry reported 107,677 people aged 100 or older this September, an increase of 7,914 from last year. The number has grown for 56 consecutive years.

Women account for 94,298 of them, or nearly 88%.

The change over time is striking. Japan recorded just 153 centenarians in 1963. By 1998, the number had reached 10,000. It passed 50,000 in 2012 and has now crossed 100,000.

The milestone comes as Japan’s overall population continues to shrink amid low birth rates. More people are reaching exceptional ages while fewer children are being born, reshaping the country’s population and increasing demand for care.

It is a remarkable longevity milestone, alongside a growing need to help people remain healthy, independent, and supported as they age.

Over 5,000 gallons of diesel just spilled from a New Jersey AI data center into a local river.

It has sparked statewide calls for a ban on data center construction.

A massive fuel spill at an Equinix data center in Secaucus, New Jersey, has released thousands of gallons of diesel into Anderson Creek, a crucial tributary of the Hackensack River.

State environmental officials and local clean-up crews rushed to contain the disaster after an estimated 5,000 to 5,500 gallons of fuel leaked from an outdoor storage tank. Local officials attributed the ecological incident to a 'computer glitch' within the automated fuel system, which reportedly continued calling for fuel deliveries despite the tank being full. While the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection reported that the spill was contained before reaching the main river and has not yet harmed local wildlife or drinking water, environmental watchdogs are warning that the long-term ecological impact on the sensitive Meadowlands ecosystem remains uncertain.

This high-profile accident has rapidly reignited political debates over the rapid expansion of energy-intensive data centers across the United States. Following the spill, climate advocacy groups, including the Gen-Z led Climate Revolution Action Network, immediately renewed demands for a statewide moratorium on new data center projects, arguing that municipal-level oversight is insufficient to prevent regional environmental hazards. As tech giants continue to build massive infrastructure to power the artificial intelligence boom, local communities are increasingly forced to balance the economic benefits of digital development against substantial risks to local grids, water resources, and vulnerable natural habitats.

The U.S. just got hit with another major recall.

Over 6 million bottles of cleaners are being recalled due to bacterial contamination.

Clorox Puerto Rico has voluntarily recalled approximately 6.3 million bottles of scented Mistolin Dilutable Cleaners and Lestoil Heavy Duty Multi-Purpose Cleaners sold across Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the affected products may contain Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a common environmental bacterium found in soil and water. While individuals with healthy immune systems typically remain unaffected, the organism poses a serious risk of severe infection for people with weakened immune systems or external medical devices if it is inhaled or enters through the eyes or open skin.

The recall targets specific scented products manufactured between April 1, 2025, and June 17, 2026, bearing date codes that start with 'PR01' followed by numbers from 25091 to 26168. Safe-to-use unscented Lestoil Original is not included in the alert.

No injuries have been reported, but consumers are urged to stop using the cleaners immediately, take photos of the UPC barcode and the bottle's date code for a full refund, and dispose of the product in their household trash.
