Living Anew Therapeutic Massage, Megan Crystal-Mendes, LMT, CEIM

Living Anew Therapeutic Massage, Megan Crystal-Mendes, LMT, CEIM Living Anew Therapeutic Massage is dedicated to empowering you through self-care education and bodywork to feel and be at your best. What a great concept!

Every session will be specific to your needs and hopefully leave you feeling lighter, looser, and happier! Living Anew Therapeutic Massage is owned and operated by Megan (Crystal) Mendes, LMT (Licensed Massage Therapist). She has been practicing Therapeutic Massage for 16 years. Megan began her training (unknowingly) in 1999 when she entered the University of Oklahoma where she completed a Bachelo

rs Degree of Science in Health and Sports Sciences. While at OU she threw the Shot Put and Discus for the Track Team all four years. Upon graduation, and after many experiences with her own body, injuries through throwing, Olympic style lifting, and intense training, she decided soft tissue bodywork was her calling. A beginning in structural bodywork seemed perfect so she enrolled in Massage School. A little over a year later she attained an Associates Degree of Therapeutic Massage at Heritage College in Oklahoma City. Over the years, she has compiled many techniques and healing modalities including Deep Tissue, Myofacial Release, Passive Release, Active Release, Joint Mobilization Stretching, Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF), Jin Shin Do, Sports, Lymphatic Drainage, Pre and Post Natal, among others, to create a specialized session for your specific needs. Emotional/mental work will sometimes be utilized, along with the physical work as it's also very important to understand how we manifest emotions physically through stress, worry, guilt, and other negative emotions. We can change our thoughts to better serve our bodies and Megan is always happy to facilitate a mental shift. As a wise Chiropractor/Healer once said, "There is no difference between the emotional body and the physical body but a label". My session with you will be one of education, listening, communication, and healing. One thing I feel very strongly about is making sure you have a better understanding of your body and how it functions in your daily life as well as posing solutions to promote self-care. I want you to feel your best and have the tools you need to work on your own Self. Megan was born in Carlsbad, NM along with her twin brother, Josh. After living in Louisiana then Oklahoma for the greater part of her life, Megan moved to Austin in February of 2006. Here in Austin, she has met many wonderful people and also has family nearby. She enjoys spending time with all of them and of course her boyfriend, Brian. In her spare time, she enjoys hearing live music, camping, kayaking, hiking, cooking, meeting new people, and watching a good movie. Of all the places I have lived, Austin just feels like home. I have enjoyed my time in Texas and look forward to the new adventures ahead with Living Anew Therapeutic Massage as well as all the new people I'll meet and can help through it.

- Much Gratitude! Megan

Many people come into my office believing chronic pain is just something they have to live with. While not every source of pain can be eliminated, the body has an incredible ability to adapt, heal, and function better when it’s given the right support.

One of the ways massage helps is by increasing circulation. Better blood flow delivers oxygen and nutrients to muscles and connective tissue. This supports the body’s natural healing process and can help reduce inflammation over time.

Massage also has a powerful effect on the nervous system. Chronic pain often keeps the body stuck in a constant state of stress and protection. Gentle, skilled touch helps shift the nervous system into a calmer “rest and repair” state, lowering stress hormones like cortisol while increasing serotonin and dopamine—chemicals that help regulate mood and decrease how intensely we experience pain.

Over time, regular massage can reduce muscle tension, improve mobility, restore healthier movement patterns, and help break the cycle of pain and guarding that so many people experience.

Healing isn’t always about finding one magic fix. More often, it’s about giving your body the consistent support it needs to do what it was designed to do.

If chronic pain has been limiting your life, I’d love to help you move more freely, feel better, and get back to doing the things you enjoy.

Good Morning!

As we head into the July 4th weekend, I’ve been reflecting on what this country stands for at its best.
Not just celebration—but hope, freedom, and the belief in a better life.

This is a place rooted in the promise of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness—shaped by generations of people seeking safety, opportunity, and a fresh start.

We don’t always live up to those ideals. But they still matter. They’re still worth holding onto—and standing for.

This weekend, I’m choosing to focus on that: Not perfection—but possibility. Not fear—but hope. Not division—but the shared humanity that connects all of us.

However you spend the holiday, I hope you find moments of rest, connection, and grounding. And maybe a reminder that the things we value most—freedom, compassion, and care for one another—are still very much alive in the small, everyday ways we show up.

Wishing you a safe and meaningful Fourth of July.

I have massage availability this week just for you...

Do you spend long hours at your desk? Are you in a role that requires you to remain mostly sedentary? In today’s environment, where we frequently look down at our phones and tablets or sit at computers for extended periods, our neck and shoulders bear the brunt of this behavior.

When we tilt our heads forward, whether while using a device or performing tasks like chopping vegetables, the muscles at the front of our neck become tense.
Over time, the scalenes and sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscles can become functionally shortened due to this repetitive motion. Additionally, the muscles in the chest can also tighten in this position. As these muscles constrict, they inadvertently pull the head and shoulders forward, disrupting the body’s alignment. Consequently, the muscles in the back of the neck and between the shoulder blades must exert extra effort to restore balance.

To counteract the poor posture that leads to discomfort, consider implementing the following tips...

1. Make sure you’re stretching the front of your neck and chest. A great way to accomplish this is to lay on an exercise ball, and let your head hang back, your arms hang to the side, and allow gravity to open up the front of your neck and your chest. This is a position we hardly ever seem to find ourselves in as humans. It feels really good, and making it an end of the day, daily habit can help change how your body feels.

2. Make sure your desk and chair, car seat, really anywhere that you sit are adjusted ergonomically for you and your body size. Someone who is 6’5” is gonna need a different chair than someone who’s 5’6”.

3. Scapular retractions and neck retractions. You can do these throughout your day at your desk, in the car, etc to help turn on and strengthen the muscles that are so stressed in the back body as you continue to work on stretching the muscles of the front body. Releasing the front takes the load off the back.

These tools can assist you in daily activities to enhance body management and prevent further postural issues.

Massage is a wonderful way to aid you in the process of correcting posture or for use as a prevention measure. We can get you started on the road to feeling better and sitting up straighter with more confidence.

Muscles work in an agonist/antagonist type way that can lead to imbalance because of repetitive movements and postures that tighten certain muscles while straining or stressing others.

The type of massage work I do tends toward balancing muscles in a way that takes pressure off the stressed muscles by helping to release the tight muscles that oppose them.

Of course low back pain can be caused by herniated discs, arthritis, bone spurs, degeneration, etc that I cannot fix for you, however, working with the soft tissues can take the pressure off.

Massage can...
* Reduce muscle guarding.
* Calm the nervous system.
* Improve circulation and fluid movement.
* Address fascia restrictions
* Improve movement patterns

Ideally, Massage is helping to reduce your pain and muscle guarding, while doing specific exercises to strengthen muscles helps to stabilize the spine, and working on proper movements and postures helps to prevent recurrence.

I would love to help you manage any chronic low back problem you might have and am always happy to get your referrals. It’s such a compliment to me when your loved ones come in to see me. Thank you for that.
