This week, American Pharmacies spearheaded a roundtable bringing together Michigan legislators, independent pharmacy owners, patients, and community leaders in Grand Rapids to discuss the growing impact of pharmacy closures and the urgent need for meaningful PBM reform.

Thank you to State Representative John Fitzgerald, Gina Johnsen - State Representative, State Representative Phil Skaggs, and State Representative Stephen Wooden for joining the conversation, along with Dave Miller of Keystone Compounding Pharmacy and the many independent pharmacy owners who shared firsthand how below-cost reimbursement, patient steering, and anti-competitive PBM practices are threatening access to care in communities across Michigan.

The Grand Rapids discussion, moderated by APRx’s Brandi Chane, builds on the momentum from earlier APRx-hosted roundtables in Clare and Clio, Michigan. Each conversation brings us one step closer to meaningful reform that protects patient access and preserves community pharmacy.

We are encouraged to see these conversations receiving statewide media attention, helping elevate the voices of independent pharmacies and the patients they serve. American Pharmacies’ President Leavoy, Chairman Hoffart and EVP Rodriguez traveled to Washington, DC earlier this week to press congressional leaders to advance PBM reform. They discussed the Pharmacists Fight Back Act, the PBM Act, the implementation of the Medicare Drug Price Negotiation Program, among other initiatives. It was a whirlwind day of eight meetings with elected congressmen and women holding critical positions. We are pleased that our message of fair reimbursement, patient access, and a level playing field was well received by all. Working together with you, we can keep pushing to achieve these important goals!

𝐔𝐒 𝐇𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐏𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐁𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐨 𝐀𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐭 𝐓𝐑𝐈𝐂𝐀𝐑𝐄
Yesterday, the U.S. House passed the National Defense Authorization Act with a provision requiring an annual study of the TRICARE PBMs contracting to reveal differences in reimbursement rates and fees between PBM-affiliated and independent pharmacies, including clawbacks, price concessions, per-prescription administrative fees, prior authorizations, dispensing timeliness, and retail network adequacy. Furthermore, Long Term Care pharmacies will now be included in this study. The Senate will take up a similar measure soon.

🚨 𝐔𝐑𝐆𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐂𝐀𝐋𝐋 𝐓𝐎 𝐀𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍: H.R. 6610, the Pharmacists Fight Back Act, is scheduled for a House Oversight Committee vote Wednesday, July 22 at 10:00 a.m. ET.

Independent pharmacies: Contact your House Oversight Committee member today and urge them to attend the meeting and vote YES on H.R. 6610.

This critical legislation would help stop harmful PBM practices by advancing transparent reimbursement, prohibiting pharmacy steering, eliminating abusive fees and requiring manufacturer rebates to be shared with patients.

Today, Dr. Micah Lansford, owner of Roden Smith Pharmacy in Clovis, New Mexico, and a member of the American Pharmacies Board of Directors, delivered compelling testimony before the US Senate Armed Services Committee, challenging Congress to take a closer look at the TRICARE pharmacy program.

“The issue before this Committee is whether the TRICARE pharmacy benefit is being managed for military families and taxpayers, or whether ESI is exploiting its contract structure to benefit itself at the expense of local access, patient choice, and community-based pharmacy care.”

The hearing examined whether the current TRICARE pharmacy benefit is serving military families or enabling conflicts of interest within its administration. Members of the Committee challenged Express Scripts CEO Adam Kautzner on whether ESI can fairly administer the benefit while also operating affiliated pharmacy businesses that may benefit from the program.

Military families deserve transparency, accountability, and a pharmacy benefit built around patient care—not one that puts local access, patient choice, and community-based pharmacy care at risk. It’s time to ensure TRICARE works for the service members, veterans, and families who depend on it.
