🦶 VA Ankle Pain Rating: Criteria & Evidence Guide

Ankle pain is not rated by pain alone.

For VA disability claims, ankle conditions are often evaluated based on how the condition limits motion, affects weight-bearing, causes instability, and impacts daily function.

Under 38 CFR § 4.71a, ankle ratings may involve limitation of motion, ankylosis, malunion, or other ankle-related impairment. For limited ankle motion, the VA lists 10% for moderate limitation and 20% for marked limitation under Diagnostic Code 5271.

Your records should not just say “ankle pain.”

They should show how far the ankle moves, when pain begins, how often flare-ups happen, whether the ankle gives out, and how the condition affects walking, standing, stairs, exercise, and work.

Strong medical evidence helps connect your symptoms to the rating criteria and shows the real-life impact of your condition.

At Valor Health, we help Veterans build credible medical documentation that speaks VA language.

Your pain matters.
Your limitations matter.
Your evidence should show both.

💪 VA Rating Criteria for Shoulder Pain Explained

Shoulder pain is not rated by pain alone.

For VA disability claims, shoulder conditions are often evaluated based on how the condition limits movement, strength, stability, and function.

Under 38 CFR § 4.71a, the VA may look at things like limitation of arm motion, ankylosis, humerus impairment, and clavicle or scapula impairment.

The VA may consider:

✅ Limited range of motion
✅ Pain with movement
✅ Weakness or instability
✅ Flare-ups
✅ Guarding of the shoulder
✅ Recurrent dislocations
✅ Difficulty lifting or reaching overhead
✅ Impact on work and daily life

Your records should not just say “shoulder pain.”

They should show how far you can move your arm, when pain begins, how often flare-ups happen, and how your shoulder affects real-life activities like lifting, carrying, driving, sleeping, dressing, or working.

Strong medical evidence can help connect your symptoms to the rating criteria and show the full impact of your condition.

At Valor Health, we help Veterans build credible medical documentation that speaks VA language.

Your pain matters.
Your limitations matter.
Your evidence should show both.
