Through TMA’s Texas BookShare program, physicians across Texas are helping put books into the hands of children while creating positive connections beyond the exam room. From clinic visits to library storytimes, these moments encourage a love of reading, ease fears about visiting the doctor, and remind young patients that physicians care for their communities in many ways.

September is Women in Medicine Month, and we’re highlighting inspiring women physicians all month. Meet today’s , Ari Brown, MD. She is a member of the Travis County Medical Society and has been a TMA member since 1999.

Dr. Brown finds great fulfillment as an author educating families outside the exam room and has published several books offering judgment-free parenting guidance from pregnancy through early childhood.

Why did you become a physician?
I found my passion for medicine in an indirect way. In high school, I was interested in medical illustration and participated in a mentorship program at a local hospital. I spent some time in a postpartum unit and newborn nursery and I became hooked. Bringing a baby into the world can be the best day-ever. I wanted to work at the happiest place on earth (even better than Disney). How many careers can give you that? I have absolutely no regrets about giving up on career in art. But I am able to channel my creative energies into writing books.

What do you like most about being a physician?
As a pediatrician, I have a special role in people's lives as I get to watch both my patients and their parents grow up. I'm there to celebrate children’s milestones and guide families through challenges. It's truly a joy and an honor to serve and advocate for children. It's fun to go to work every day and love that I can say that about my profession!

Involved with TMA’s Committee on Medicaid, CHIP, and the Uninsured since its inception in the early 2000s, William Brendle Glomb, MD, brings the additional perspective of serving as chief medical director for the Texas Health and Human Services Commission between 2008 and 2013. He looks forward to chairing a committee devoted to helping the underserved, especially children, gain better access to health care. “There’s no logical reason why taking care of a child in Texas ... should not equate to the care of an adult,” the Waco pediatric pulmonologist said.

Thomas Kim, MD, and Vincent Fonseca, MD, serve up advice about healthy eating in a new episode of the A Better Question podcast. We are “goal setting, self-monitoring [and practicing] stimulus control,” said Dr. Fonseca, who specializes in public health and general preventive medicine .

TMA Council on Legislation Chair Jimmy Widmer, MD, testified before the House Select Committee on Health Care Affordability. “We need to address health care costs that continue growing faster than the ability of families and employers to afford them,” said Dr. Widmer. In his testimony, he outlined several specific actions Texas could take to help solve the affordability problem, including improving viability of independent physician practice, removing administrative waste from prior authorization, and giving Texans better options for finding and financing meaningful coverage.
