I finally rebuilt the McInnis Mental Health website from the ground up.

The new site explains how I work, who I work best with, and the ideas behind the McInnis Method. I also added free mental health guides on shame, gaslighting, responsibility, self-abandonment, and getting results from therapy.
If you're curious about what I've been building, take a look:

McInnis Method Principle VI: Protection is paid for in capacity, and the capacity survives somewhere.

Sometimes what looks like personality is actually protection that's been around so long it stopped feeling like protection.

"I'm just not direct."
"I hate conflict."
"I've always been a people pleaser."

But then you find the exception. You're direct at work. You held your ground with one friend, no problem.

That exception is everything. It shows the ability isn't gone, you already know how to do this. The real question is why you can do it there, but not here.

Therapy is finding where that ability survived, and figuring out what made it unsafe everywhere else.

McInnis Method Principle V: Adaptations organize around assumptions

A lot of patterns that look unrelated are actually the same rule, just showing up in different clothes.

Don't disappoint people.

If someone's upset with me, I did something wrong.

If I say what I actually want, I might lose the relationship.

I need to know what's coming before I can relax.

Nobody walks around consciously thinking this stuff. The assumption's been there so long it stopped feeling like an assumption, it just feels like how the world works. So you build your whole life around it without noticing.

You avoid the conversation. Over explain the next one. Read way too much into someone's tone. Say yes when every part of you wants to say no. Different rooms, different people, sometimes the exact same rule running underneath.

That's a lot of what therapy is, honestly, trying to catch the rule a pattern is following.

Because once you can say it out loud, something shifts. It stops being "just how things are" and starts being an assumption.

And assumptions can be tested.

McInnis Method Principle IV: What you felt is real. What you decided it meant can be checked.
If you felt rejected, embarrassed, angry, scared, or hurt, I'm not going to argue with you about whether you really felt it. You did.
But what you decided that feeling meant is a different question.
You can feel rejected and conclude, "She doesn't care about me." You can feel anxious and conclude, "Something bad is about to happen." You can feel guilty and conclude, "I must have done something wrong."
Those conclusions might be right. They might not be. We can check.
This distinction matters in therapy, because validating someone's feelings shouldn't mean automatically agreeing with the story attached to them.
And the same rule applies to me. Just because I'm the therapist doesn't mean my interpretation gets a free pass. If I think I see a pattern, we should be able to test whether it actually fits your life.
The McInnis Method doesn't want to talk people out of what they feel.
It wants to help them get better at separating what they felt, what they know, and what they decided it meant.

Most people come to therapy asking, “What’s wrong with me?”
I think there’s a better place to start.
The McInnis Method is about understanding the patterns you developed, why they made sense, and how to adapt them for who you are now.
I work primarily with men and young adults in Austin. If you or someone you know has been thinking about therapy, feel free to reach out.

McInnis Method Principle III: Reality changes people more reliably than explanation.
You can understand a pattern perfectly and still keep repeating it.
Insight is important. But at some point, something has to happen outside the therapy room.
You say the thing you've been avoiding. You set the boundary. You sit with the uncertainty instead of fixing it. You act differently and find out what actually happens.
That's the part explanation can't give you: new evidence, the kind your nervous system actually believes.
Therapy isn't just about understanding your life better. It's about living differently enough that reality gets a chance to teach you something new.
Understanding opens the door. Experience is what changes the room.

Most of us are responding to situations that no longer exist.

A child growing up with an unpredictable parents learns to read a room before they learn to read a book.

Who's angry?

Who's disappointed?

Is it safe to speak?

This is not weakness.

It is learned common sense.

It was an adaptation that solved a real problem.

The trouble is that adaptations don't automatically disappear when danger does.

Years later, the same person may still be scanning every conversation for signs that someone is upset.

Still apologizing too quickly.

Still avoiding conflict that no longer has the same consequences.

The adaptation isn't asking, "Am I still in danger?"

It is only doing the job it was trained to do.

One of the goals of therapy is helping people recognize when they're living by rules that were written for a long gone chapter of their life.

Whatever you are doing, it hangs together. None of it is random.

The first question in therapy is never, "What's wrong with you?"

It's, "How does all of this fit together?"

This is the opening principle of the McInnis Method Constitution. I recently wrote eight principles that explain the assumptions I bring into every therapy session. If people enjoy this, I'll share the remaining principles over the coming weeks.
