EXPLAINER: What Is Molecular Hydrogen and Why Are Researchers Paying Attention?
If you follow longevity research, you've probably seen molecular hydrogen (H2) mentioned with increasing frequency. Here's a primer on why it's generating interest in the clinical community.
What it is: Molecular hydrogen is the simplest and smallest molecule in existence — two hydrogen atoms bonded together. When dissolved in water and consumed, it acts as a selective antioxidant.
Why 'selective' matters: Unlike traditional antioxidants (vitamin C, E, resveratrol) which neutralize all free radicals indiscriminately, H2 specifically targets hydroxyl radicals and peroxynitrite — the two most destructive reactive oxygen species in human biology. It leaves beneficial free radicals (needed for immune signaling and exercise adaptation) untouched.
Why size matters: At just 2 atomic mass units, H2 crosses every biological membrane in the body, including the blood-brain barrier and mitochondrial membranes. No other antioxidant molecule can make this claim.
The research: Over 2,000 peer-reviewed studies. 80+ registered clinical trials. Research spanning cardiovascular protection, neuroprotection, anti-inflammation, metabolic health, and exercise recovery. Published in journals including Nature Medicine, Free Radical Research, and the Journal of Clinical Biochemistry and Nutrition.
What to look for: Not all H2 products are equal. Concentration (measured in PPM) varies dramatically. The clinical studies showing results used 8-12 PPM. Many commercial products deliver 2-3 PPM. Third-party verification and IHSA certification are the most reliable indicators of quality.
