Is Sitting Really the New Smoking?
Hereâs something I see in my office every day.  People who sit at a desk 8â10 hours a day When they stand up feeling stiff, they donât realize that tight hip flexors are contributing to their back pain. Iâm talking about a muscle called the Psoas. Itâs one of the largest muscles in your body and is the only muscle that originates from the lumbar spine (T-12 through L5) crosses your waist and inserts into the largest bone in your body, the femur.
On a cool side note. This muscle on a cow is the loved filet mignon. The reason that cut of meat is so tender on a cow is because a cow doesnât sit.
Think about how much you sit. In the car, at your desk, the couch, etc.
While sitting is obviously not as dangerous as smoking, spending a large part of your day sedentary has been associated with low back pain and an increased risk of chronic disease.
The good news is that many of these musculoskeletal effects are reversible.
What Happens to Your Body?
1. Hip flexors shorten over time, increasing stress on the lumbar spine.
2. Glute inhibition (âglute amnesiaâ) reduces pelvic stability and shifts work to the low back.
3. Prolonged sitting increases sustained loading on lumbar discs, especially with poor posture.
4. Reduced movement slows circulation and contributes to stiffness and fatigue.
5. Sitting often aggravates sciatica in susceptible individuals.
Five Ways to Reverse the Damage
⢠Stand every 30â45 minutes.
⢠Stretch your hip flexors daily.
⢠Strengthen your glutes with bridges, squats, and band walks.
⢠Improve workstation ergonomics.
⢠Have your spine evaluated if symptoms persist.
Harvard Health notes that prolonged sitting is linked to poorer musculoskeletal and overall health, but regular movement breaks can reduce many of these risks.
