When the eldest daughter marries into a family, she doesn’t stop being the eldest daughter.
She may arrive already trained to anticipate needs, smooth over tension, keep everyone connected, and take responsibility for other people’s feelings. At first, that can look like being thoughtful and accommodating. But when expectations rise, boundaries are interpreted as rejection, or her effort goes unacknowledged, resentment follows.
Sometimes the “difficult daughter-in-law” is simply an exhausted eldest daughter who has decided she cannot emotionally manage another entire family.
