We've almost reached the end of 🥲 SAMHSA's theme for this final week of May is "Connection Is a Powerful Form of Care."

It's hard to overstate the importance of support from loves ones when someone is struggling with mental health challenges. Feeling heard and respected can be deeply healing, and listening with compassion makes a huge difference. At the same time, understanding serious mental illness can help you respond with empathy as well as confidence.

As we finish this month and move forward into the rest of the year, please remember to always treat those who struggle with mental health with kindness, care, and encouragement. 💝🌱

Last week, our Hendricks County Director of Operations, Sierra Hess (second from left in photo), participated in a panel presentation for at the Brownsburg Chamber of Commerce. Today is World Schizophrenia Awareness Day! Schizophrenia is a mental health disorder characterized by periods of psychosis, also called psychotic episodes. During these episodes, an individual may have difficulty understanding what is real and what is not real. They may see or hear things that are not really there (called hallucinations) or believe things that are untrue or illogical (called delusions).

The good news about schizophrenia is that it is treatable! A combination of antipsychotic medications, therapy, and in some cases, electroconvulsive therapy, can greatly help individuals who have schizophrenia reduce and better manage psychotic episodes.

SAMHSA's theme for the third week of is "Words Matter and Words Can Heal."

Language can be used to divide people, and it can also be used to unite them. Terms that seem to define a person only by their struggles (e.g. "schizophrenics," "drug addicts," "the mentally ill") can make people who live with these struggles feel even more isolated from others.

This week, we encourage you to think about the language you use when discussing mental health challenges. Changing how you speak to people (e.g. "I know you struggle with schizophrenia," "How can we get you help for your substance use disorder?") can be surprisingly effective for helping them through recovery. 🕊️
