King’s Speech & Learning Center in Connecticut trains speech, language, social, academic, and career skills for success across the lifespan. We have an innovative network of speech therapists to meet the individual needs of all our clients. Some of our services include speech-language therapy, social skills groups, public speaking & interview training, reading intervention, school staffing, and independent speech-language evaluations.

🎃 Wednesday Activity: Halloween “Would You Rather?”
Have your child choose between two silly Halloween options and explain why they picked their answer!
👻 Would you rather be a ghost or a vampire?
🎃 Would you rather carve a pumpkin or decorate cookies?
🕷️ Would you rather have 8 spider legs or be able to fly?
🍬 Would you rather have chocolate or gummy candy?
🧙 Would you rather be a witch or a wizard?
After they choose, encourage them to explain their reasoning:
💬 “Why did you choose that one?”
💬 “What would you do if…?”
💬 “Can you think of another reason?”
This simple game helps build expressive language, reasoning, vocabulary, conversation skills, and perspective-taking—and it's easy to adapt for different ages!

🍂 Monday Communication Tip: Give Choices! 💬 Instead of asking, “What do you want for a snack?” try, “Do you want an apple or crackers?”
Giving choices makes it easier for children to respond while encouraging them to communicate, make decisions, and express their preferences. Try it throughout the day when choosing clothes, games, snacks, or activities! Two choices = two opportunities to communicate! 🗣️

🧠 Friday Myth or Fact
❌ MYTH: A child who doesn't follow directions is just not listening.
✅ FACT: Difficulty following directions can be related to language comprehension, memory, attention, or processing.
Sometimes “not listening” isn't a choice or a behavior problem. A child may need directions broken down into smaller steps, extra processing time, or visual support to understand what is being asked. 💬 Before assuming they're not listening, consider whether they might need a little extra support to understand!

💙 Wednesday Activity: What Would You Do?
With National Stop Bullying Day on October 14, we’re taking a moment to talk about kindness, inclusion, and how we can support others. Try giving your child a few everyday social situations and asking, “What would you do?”
💬 What could you say to someone who is being left out?
💬 How might that person be feeling?
💬 What could you do if you see someone being treated unkindly?
💬 Who could you ask for help?
These conversations are great opportunities to practice perspective-taking, empathy, problem-solving, and social communication skills. At King’s Speech & Learning, we believe every child deserves to feel safe, included, and respected. We stand against bullying in all forms. 💙

🍁 Monday Communication Tip
Expand on What Your Child Says! 💬
When your child says something, try adding one or two words to their message.
👧 “The leaves are falling!”
🧑 “Yes! The colorful leaves are falling!”
🐶 “Big dog!”
🧑 “Yes! That is a big, fluffy dog!”
This simple strategy helps children hear new vocabulary and learn how to use longer, more detailed sentences—all during everyday conversations!

✅ FACT: Pretend play is a great way to build language and communication skills!

🍂 Wednesday Activity: Fall Scavenger Hunt! 🍁

Take advantage of the beautiful fall weather with a fall scavenger hunt! Head outside and see how many items you can find together. 🔎 As you search, encourage your child to describe what they find using words like big/small, smooth/rough, light/dark, and same/different.

You can also ask:
💬 “Which item was your favorite?”
💬 “What does it feel like?”
💬 “How are these two leaves different?”

A simple outdoor activity can be a great opportunity to practice vocabulary, describing, categorizing, and expressive language skills! 🗣️🍂
