While youโre out there living your best life at the gym, you may not realize the decibel levels there could be damaging your hearing. ๐๏ธ
The World Health Organization (WHO) states exposure to noise levels above 85 decibels (dB) for prolonged periods can lead to hearing impairment. However, many fitness classes average noise levels well over 90 dB, with some between 100 to 110 decibels. This is around the dB level of a chainsaw or concert which can cause permanent hearing damage if exposed to for too long.
Next time youโre at the gym, there are two simple things you can do to protect your hearing if youโre concerned about the level of noise:
If youโre taking a fitness class, you can wear ear plugs.
๐No one will know they are ear plugs because they look just like earbuds.
๐If youโre exercising solo and wearing earbuds to listen to your own music, you can go into the settings on your phone or music device and make sure the dB level is below 85
