Susan had a love for gardening and an eye for fashion and style. She treasured the many lifelong friendships she cultivated over the years and often referred to those friends as her chosen family. One dear friend introduced her to Eastern Oregon, ultimately inspiring her to move from Portland to Baker City.

A graveside service for Susan will be held on June 11, 2026, at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Baker City.

With the draft hanging over his head, he enlisted in the Navy and completed Great Lakes Hospital Corps School, thinking he'd meet some cute nurses. Instead, he ended up on the front lines in Vietnam in the 1st Marine Division as a Hospital Corpsman. Jay did his year of active duty in Vietnam, finishing his service in Japan. Jay was quite humble, not wishing to bring attention to himself, but he was awarded several medals during his service.

The farming and ranching community was a consistent part of Howard's life through several careers. He co-owned Britton Equipment Company with his brother, Harold, and friend Leo Poe. He later worked as a loan officer for the Production Credit Association. He also did a stint in the woods working for his friend, Larry Raley.
