EXTERN SPOTLIGHT: Andrea Martinez Membrila — University of California, Irvine

Meet Andrea, an incoming freshman at the University of California, Irvine and an extern in the 2026 Kern Family Health Care Summer Externship Program.

This summer, Andrea gained valuable insight into the administrative side of health care. As part of the Delegation Oversight team, she supported the Medicare process for members and visited clinics across Kern County, giving her the opportunity to meet people from diverse backgrounds and see how quality care is delivered behind the scenes.

"My biggest takeaway from this experience is that paying attention to detail is essential because it can affect the accuracy of a member's information and the quality of support they receive," Andrea says.

As a Nursing Science major, Andrea looks forward to applying the skills and knowledge she gained this summer throughout her education and future career in health care.
"I am extremely grateful for this opportunity and all those I met along the way," she shares.

We are excited to see where Andrea’s passion for health care takes her and her future accomplishments.

EXTERN SPOTLIGHT: Nathalie Estrada — Highland High School

Meet Nathalie, an incoming senior at Highland High School and a part of the 2026 Kern Family Health Care Summer Externship Program.

As an extern in our Member Services department, Nathalie gained hands-on experience supporting members and volunteering at a collaborative community event with CAPK. “This experience was beyond phenomenal,” she says. “It helped me build myself up as a person in a short period of time.”

One of Nathalie's biggest takeaways was gaining confidence in the workplace. She says the support and encouragement she received from her colleagues and supervisors helped her feel more comfortable asking questions and speaking up. “Thank you all, who made me realize there is no such thing as a ‘silly question,’” she says.

After high school, Nathalie plans to use the skills she developed during her externship to pursue a career in health care and become a radiologic technologist. We wish Nathalie the best and look forward to seeing the impact she will make in the future.

Today, we celebrate the incredible student externs who completed the 2026 KFHC Summer Externship Program! 🎓🎉

This summer, we welcomed local high school and college students who brought curiosity and enthusiasm for exploring the many pathways within health care. Our externs gained a firsthand look at the field by connecting with Kern Family leaders, engaging with community partners, and participating in office and community-based activities.

In addition, our Winning Wednesday sessions helped externs develop skills they can take beyond the program, including professional communication, resume building, personal finance and more. They wrapped up their summer by sharing their reflections, lessons learned and future goals through final presentations.

We are incredibly proud of this amazing cohort and grateful to help shape the next generation of health care leaders. Congratulations, externs, we can’t wait to see where your passion and hard work take you next! ❤️
