We often come to therapy because something hurts. We want to feel less anxious, overwhelmed, or stuck.
But healing can reveal something unexpected: sometimes, we have to learn how to tolerate joy, too.
When your nervous system is used to anticipating disappointment, conflict, or loss, even positive emotions can feel vulnerable. Hope can feel risky. Connection can feel unfamiliar. Joy can make us brace for what might come next.
Therapy can help widen our window of tolerance—not only for difficult emotions, but for the experiences we want more of: connection, pleasure, hope, love, and joy.
Healing isn’t only about learning to hurt less. It’s also about learning to let more in.
