Obituary for Nicholas Hubert
Feb. 17, 1997 May 25, 2026

• Nicholas Roman Hubert, 29, passed away on Memorial Day morning, leaving behind a family who loved him deeply and will miss him endlessly.
Nick was the kind of person this world does not see often enough – humble, kindhearted, loyal, and endlessly giving. He was a devoted Son, Brother, Uncle, Nephew, Cousin, and friend whose heart always belonged to his family. If someone needed help, Nick was there without hesitation. He never ended a phone call without saying “love you”, and the people closest to him never had to question how deeply they mattered to him.
Nick was a proud brother of Boilermakers Local 169. He also enjoyed his recent transition to be a Certified Boiler Operator at the Vicinity Steam Plant in Downtown Grand Rapids. He was often described as hardworking, reliable, and talented.
He found joy in life’s simple things: boat rides, time up north with his family, working on cars or in his garage, evenings around a fire, a summer night car cruise, a good old-fashioned Jack’s pizza, and any laughter shared with the people he loved most. Nick had a hearty laugh that could fill a room, a hug that you could feel for days, a carefree way of dancing like nobody was watching, and a generosity that made him willing to give the shirt off his back to anyone in need.
Though he quietly carried burdens of his own, Nick always tried to protect others from pain. He stood strong when he needed to, loved fiercely, and gave so much of himself to those around him.
Nick is survived by, Nicole Davenport (Mother) Tim Hubert and Renee Jackson (Father and Stepmother), Andrew Hubert (Brother), Emilie (Kevin) Roe (Sister), Nieces Carlie and Vivienne and his very beloved companion – Izzy and a large extended loving family.

May his memory live on in every laugh, every sunset by the water, every roaring fire, and every “love you” spoken without hesitation.

Kristy Lee Whitt (Hall), 71, of Baldwin, Michigan, passed away peacefully on March 10, 2026. Born on June 9, 1954, at Flint Osteopathic Hospital to Floyd and Adeline Hall, Kris
was a woman of quiet strength, creative spirit, and deep devotion to the people she loved.

Kris married the love of her life, Lee Whitt, on March 30, 1995, and together they built a home full of warmth, laughter, and the unmistakable mark of her hands. She was the kind of woman who could look at an ordinary kitchen floor and see something beautiful waiting to be painted — and then do it herself, freehand, to look like tile. She fashioned a closet door out of carved sticks by hand. Whatever needed doing, Kris found a way — and made it look like art.

For 16 years, Kris served as a Pharmacy Technician at Hurley Hospital, where her precision and reliability made her a trusted member of the team. Outside of work, she was most at home in the outdoors — casting a line or heading into the woods. An avid fisher
and huntress, she had a keen eye for spotting morel mushrooms and a natural ease in nature that reflected her grounded, no-fuss spirit.

Kris is survived by her beloved husband, Lee Whitt; her stepdaughter, Beverly Lynn; her stepsons, Chad Whitt, Donald and Holly Austin, and Walt and Kandace Alexander; her granddaughter and husband, Christine and Anthony Davis; her grandson, Hunter Gaydou; her granddaughter, Carly Whitt; and her great-grandsons, Lukas and Owen Davis. She is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Sam and Connie Smith; her brother-in-law, Tony Whitt; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Floyd and Adeline Hall, and her sister-in-law, Carolyn Whitt.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Kristy's name to any animal rescue of your choice.

Kris will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her —a woman who made everything around her a little more beautiful.

Obituary for Tonya Leigh Laurie

Tonya Leigh Laurie, a woman whose life was defined by her devotion to her family and her generous, nurturing spirit, passed away on March 10, 2026, in her home in Irons, Michigan. Born in Dearborn, Michigan, on March 13, 1957, to Billie Dean Quillen and Grace Elizabeth Quillen (Sturgill), Tonya spent her life creating a warm and welcoming world for everyone she touched.

In 1974, Tonya went on a blind date that would change her life forever. There, she met Bradford Laurie, and the two were married on January 24th, 1975, at Taylor Center Baptist Church, in Taylor, Michigan. Their 51-year marriage was a testament to enduring love, partnership, and the beautiful family they built together.

Tonya was the ultimate caregiver. She possessed a true service personality, always happiest when she was ensuring those around her were comfortable and had what they needed to enjoy themselves. This natural gift for helping others extended into her professional life, where she excelled in sales and service-based work.

She lived for the simple pleasures: a long phone call with family and friends, a good movie or ID Network, a perfectly made smashburger, and, most of all, the holidays. Tonya loved the hustle and bustle of the season; she could always be found in the heart of the kitchen, helping prepare holiday meals wherever the family gathered. From her famous spaghetti salad to the tradition of "Nacho Night," her cooking was a staple that her family and friends will forever cherish and miss.

Some of Tonya’s fondest memories were made at the family’s cozy cabin in Irons, Michigan. She loved having the house full of laughter and seeing her children and grandchildren enjoy the food, fun, and peace at the cabin.

Tonya was preceded in death by her parents, Billie Dean and Grace Quillen, and her sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Steve Papp.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Bradford Laurie; her three children, Jaime Kimberlin (Paul), Karrie Laurie (Stan), and Shaun Laurie; and her sisters, Julie Powandra (Steve) and Sherry Michalski (Steve).

Her legacy continues through her grandchildren, Kyle Laurie, Chelsea Laurie, Austin Laurie (Neicca), Lindsey Laurie, Quincy SeGraves, Alexis Burt (Mason), Bradley Foster, and Stanley Foster Jr., as well as her great-grandchildren: Eric Barnett Jr., Dawson Barnett, Brady Carr, Rowan Burt, and Baby Burt (due in September 2026). Tonya joins her great-grandchild, baby Jordan, in eternal rest.

Tonya’s warmth, her cooking, her long phone calls, and her selfless love for her family will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Family and friends will be received for a memorial and celebration of life gathering, which will be planned for a later date.

Obituary for Mary Elizabeth "Liz" Atkinson

Mary Elizabeth "Liz" Atkinson passed away on February 3rd, 2026.
Liz was a woman who faced many challenges throughout her journey. Though her life was never easy, she navigated it the best she could, finding joy in the things she loved most. She had a lifelong fascination with the glamour of Marilyn Monroe and a deep, soft spot for animals. She will be deeply missed by her beloved dog, Oh, and her faithful cat, Calico Kitty.

She is survived by her daughter, Laurie Wilson, and her son, Douglas Wilson. She is also survived by her sister, Claudia Feldman, who resides in Paris. Liz leaves behind a legacy of eight grandchildren: Douglas, Kevin, Britney, Jennifer, Hannah, Christopher, Grace, and Noel, as well as her great-grandchild, Sophia.

Liz was preceded in death by her husband, Jan, and her son, George, whose passing at the age of 19 was a profound loss she carried with her.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to her neighbors, Dan and Louise Allen who showed extraordinary kindness to Liz over the past several years. The family also mourns the loss of Louise, who passed away just four days before Liz, on January 31st.

The family takes comfort in the hope that Liz is finally at rest, reunited with Jan and her son George, finding the stillness and peace that life did not always afford her.

Lynn Edward Gale of Bitely MI. Passed away peacefully on February 14th, 2026. Lynn is survived By His son Kenneth Scott Gale and a sister Nancy (Gale) Buck.

Lynn Worked and retired from Borden Foods (Jay's Potato Chip Co.). Lynn enjoyed many Hobbies such as hunting, fishing and going to the Upper Peninsula, he also never missed a senior bus trip up north. He most of all enjoyed working in his garden at home. Lynn enjoyed life right up until the end, Lynn was loved by all of his family and friends.

Lynn is proceeded in death by his Parents 1 son Terry Gale and a sister Patrcia (Gale) Andrews.

Obituary for Robert Kenneth Reidel (May 5th, 1947-February 6th, 2026)

Robert ‘Bob’ Reidel, age 78, of Baldwin Michigan lived a wonderful life. He was a loving
husband, a proud father and grandfather, and an active community member.

Bob was born in Libertyville, Illinois on May 5th
, 1947, to Wallace and Amelia Reidel. He
was the youngest of four children. Bob graduated from Mundelein High School in 1965.
Shortly after high school, Bob was drafted into the Army. He served in the Vietnam War
where he was in the 9 th
Infantry Division (River Rat). He was very proud to serve his
country.

On his return to Illinois, Bob joined the Lake Forest Police Department in 1969. He met
the love of his life, Ruthie Flaig, and they knew they were meant to be together. They
were married on June 14th
, 1970, in the Bureau Congregational Church in Bureau,
Illinois and built a beautiful life together. Bob and Ruthie had four children, Rachele,
Emily, Carissa, and Jacob, who meant the world to them. They took many memorable
vacations together and spent lots of time with Ruthie’s family in Princeton, Illinois. When
Ruthie died unexpectedly in 1997; Bob’s strength held his family together as they
continued their life in the Lake Bluff and Lake Forest Communities. Bob was a great
neighbor and an active member in Grace United Methodist Church.

Bob was a member of the Lake Forest Police Department for 32 years until his
retirement as a Commander in 2001. He enjoyed his work and his colleagues and
earned the respect of everyone who met him.

In 2002, Bob built a new home on Lake Cecilia and moved to Baldwin Michigan. While
in Baldwin, Bob was the Lake Township Clerk from the year 2008 until he passed in
February. He thoroughly enjoyed his retirement and the friends he made in the
community.

Bob’s greatest joy was being with his family. He treasured the time he had with his five
grandchildren. From reading stories to them in his favorite chair to riding his
grandchildren around on his tractor, Bob found great happiness in watching his
grandchildren play and grow.
Everyone who knew Bob appreciated his great sense of humor and kindness. He was
always ready to lend a helping hand to everyone he met. He enjoyed reading books,
playing cribbage, watching John Wayne movies, spoiling his pets, traveling, wearing fun
shirts, and spending time around the campfire with his family. He always enjoyed sitting
on the porch and watching the birds or the sunset on the lake. He was excellent
cook, and he liked to try unique and interesting foods. No matter where he was or who
he was with, Bob had a way of making everyone feel special.

Bob was preceded in death by his loving wife Ruthie, his parents, Wallace Reidel and
Amelia (Celba) Reidel, and his sister Mary Louise Shipley.

Bob is survived by his children, Rachele Reidel (Colleen Chapoton), Emily Africano,
Carissa Reidel, and Jacob (Laura) Reidel, his grandchildren Zachary and Henry Reidel,
Cola Africano, and Peter and Ruthie Chapoton-Reidel. He leaves his brothers Wallace
and Ray (Connie) Reidel, sisters-in-laws Anna, Ella, and Laraine, his many nephews
and nieces, and so many friends.

Bob will have a visitation at the Lake Township Hall in Lake Township on Saturday,
February 21st, from 9:30am to 11:30am. There will also be a burial service at the Fort
Sheridan National Cemetery in Lake Forest, Illinois. On June 29th, 1100, am.
Any memorial contributions should be made to the Bread of Life Food Pantry in Baldwin,
Michigan or the Lake Forest Police Foundation.

Elmer Jason Lokers, 94, passed away on January 11, 2026, and Marilyn Jean (Brower) Lokers, 93, passed away on January 13, 2026, at The Orchards of Big Rapids.

Elmer was preceded in death by his parents, John and Ruby (Martinie) Lokers and four siblings. Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Frances (Brummler) Brower and two siblings. They were also preceded by their daughter, Jane Skowron. They are both survived by their three children: Tom (Darcy) Lokers, Bob (Rosemary) Lokers, of Big Rapids and Mary Lokers of Bloomington, IN; nine grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.

On September 9, 2025, Elmer and Marilyn were blessed to celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary with their immediate family.

Elmer and Marilyn were long-time residents of Holland, MI. In 1971 Elmer and Marilyn moved with their four children to Colombia, South America to serve two years with Wycliffe Translators. In 1980, they moved to central Florida and served with New Tribes Mission (Ethos 360) until 1988 when they returned to Michigan and worked with Eagle Village until retirement.

A Celebration of Life for Elmer and Marilyn will be held at 2:00 on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at the Green Charter Township Hall (21431 Northland Drive, Big Rapids). Verdun Funeral Home in Baldwin, MI will have this information as well.

Debra (Debbie) Russell, Age 73 of Baldwin, Michigan passed
away on January 8th, 2026, after a short, courageous, hard
fought battle with colon cancer.

She was born March 11th,1952 in Lansing, Mi., the daughter of Donald and Shirley (Hathaway) Slater. Debbie grew up in Dewitt Mi., graduated high school and attended Lansing Community College. Her family had a cottage on Lake Ceceila where her family eventually called home and soon after met Scott Russell, marrying him on July 3rd, 1971. They made their home and raised their family just a stones-throw away from where Scott grew up in Baldwin. A dedicated public servant with a passion for her family and community, Debbie served on multiple boards, volunteered for many events and devoted all her free time to family, friends, quilting, gardening and Corvette-riding. She has been a member of the VFW Post 5315 since the mid 80’s and a heart-felt believer in the work of Habitat for Humanity.

She will be deeply missed by her loving family including her husband Scott of 54 years, her children: Jamie Russell of Baldwin, Bryan (Latrice) Russell of Cedar Springs and Brent (Breanne) Russell of Holland; 8 grandchildren, Andrew, Allison, Thomas, Miles, Lelend, Amaris, MacKenza and Kedrin. Sisters: Linda (Asa) Bigelow of Portland, Judy (Terry) Tahvonen of Portland and Brother: Carl (Doris) Slater of Dewitt. Debbie has a very large extended family of cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews and one great great nephew.

Debbie is preceded in death by her parents, her brother Cal Slater, sister-in-law LeeAnn Russell and brother-in-law Greg Russell.

On December 26th, the Lord called HIS faithful servant home.
Harry Boyd Johnson Jr., husband, father and grandfather, and friend to hundreds, passed away at Corewell Health Blodgett Campus, of complications he developed after suffering a stroke. His wife, Laura, of 57 years was at his side when he gained his wings.
Harry was born in Detroit Michigan on August 25th, to Harry Boyd Johnson Sr. and Ruth Irene (Taylor) Johnson.
Harry enlisted in the US Navy directly after graduating from Fordson High School in Dearborn, Michigan. He served his country proudly as a Navy Boat Coxswain, on the USS Calvert (APA-32). He received an honorable discharge after serving in active duty during
the Vietnam War.
Following Harry’s military service, he had several jobs. The most interesting being apprentice mortician. He found the work very interesting, but he told me he quit because it interfered with his dating life!
He found a home on the C & O Railroad, first working as a brakeman, then switched over to being an engineer. He left the Detroit/Dearborn yards and headed to Grand Rapids in 1973, where he worked the road trains. He ended that career after 16 1/2 years, then enrolled in the Graphic Arts program at Ferris State University, graduating in 1999 with an associate degree. His intention was to become a teacher, but his career path changed once again when he was offered a job as a Postal Clerk at the White Cloud Post office. He retired from his second career in 2010.
When Harry relocated his family to the north woods of Bitely in 1975, he looked forward to many hours of hunting and fishing.
Harry was invited to join the International Association of Lions club, Brohman club, by a fellow railroader, Ray Robotham. He jumped in with both feet! His Lion career spanned over 50 years! He held all offices, working up to District Governor in 1999-2000. Also serving on several State committees as chairman.
Harry was known for his generous heart of service. This
lead him into coaching T-Ball, Little League, running the White Cloud Homecoming children’s games, Bitely Homecoming chairman for over 50 years.
Harry was also a 32-degree Mason, with his membership in the Ionic Lodge and the Moslem Temple Shriners. He served in the Oriental band.
His real passion was volunteering at the Spring Special Olympics working in Opening Eyes Vision Screening.
Harry was known for eager spirit to volunteer wherever there was a need.
His proudest moments were the 14 Vision Mission trips to Mexico and Central America.
Harry’s extended family includes daughter, Amanda Jo (Brett)Morton, granddaughter Julieann Marie and grandson Boyd.
Harry was a gentle, caring husband to Laura for 57 years, his three sons, Scott and Charles Johnson, both of Bitely, and Louis Johnson of Baldwin. Harry’s pride and joy was his only Grandchild, Gavin Johnson, also of Bitely.
Harry was preceded in death by both his parents Ruth and Harry Johnson of Dearborn, Michigan.
He is survived by two brothers’
Charles (Angie) Johnson of Dearborn and Thomas (Terri)Johnson of Peebles, Ohio, plus several nieces and nephews.
A special memorial service for all his Lions family throughout the state, will be held on Friday, January 2, viewing from 7:00 pm to 7:30 pm with service at 7:30.
A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, January 3rd, with viewing at 10:30, service at 11:00 am. Both will be held at the Big Jackson Church of God, 4001 13 Mile Rd, Paris, Mi.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Bitely Homecoming Organization or Lions Clubs International, earmarked for the Opening Eyes Vision Screening at the Special Olympics.
