🥄 Reminder that every child develops at their own pace, and mealtimes can showcase these unique preferences.

A few tips:
🍌 If your baby is still learning motor skills on a non-standard timeline, special utensils may enable them to feed themselves.
🥦 Picky eaters sometimes benefit from using new utensils.
🫐 For babies not very interested in using a spoon, a spoon specifically made for babies can help.

Lastly, utensils make fun, affordable, useful gifts for little kids.

Every emotion we experience can become intense at times, which makes us want to act in certain ways. When Harold the Hedgehog was feeling a lot of anger and sadness, he ran away and started crying. However, Harold learned that when these big emotions take over, the best thing we can do is grab something calming, like the items in Harold’s self-care backpack, to help us feel better. These calming items can help bring us back to the present moment. After our intense emotions pass we will be better able to choose how to handle challenging moments.

Encourage your elementary schooler to watch this video of kids talking about their emotions. Even better — watch it with your child and discuss these key findings together:

1️⃣ Everyone feels big and intense emotions sometimes.
2️⃣ Everyone has urges to act that are caused by big, intense, and uncomfortable emotions. The key is riding out the urge and waiting for big feelings to lessen.
3️⃣ You can ride out big feelings by using your five senses (sight, sound, taste, touch, smell) to ground to the present.

Parenting a teen is not easy. Many outside influences distract our youth and add challenges to parenting efforts. Youth need adults who are there for them—people who connect with them, communicate with them, spend time with them, and show a genuine interest in them. By engaging in positive parenting, parents can help their adolescent make better choices. Here is a positive parenting tip to help you support your teen during this time:

RESPECT YOUR TEEN’S OPINION. LISTEN TO THEM WITHOUT PLAYING DOWN THEIR CONCERNS.

Vitamin A, at any dose, does not protect against measles and no parent should give to their child vitamin A in hopes of preventing measles. Vitamin A is a micronutrient, meaning very small amounts are all we need to stay healthy and we get those through a healthy diet and in recommended doses of over-the-counter multivitamin supplements. Larger doses of vitamin A given over prolonged periods are very dangerous and can lead to vomiting, blurry vision, headaches, and, when more severe, liver damage and coma.

It is recommended, that under a doctor's supervision, kids infected with measles be given vitamin A once a day for two days to reduce the severity of the illness. But that is a small amount in a medical setting. The only way to prevent measles is to get your child vaccinated with the MMR vaccine. Talk to your pediatrician with questions.
