Today is World Maternal Mental Health Day.
Here is something I have learned, both as a therapist and as a mother:
So many of the women I work with don't lose themselves in motherhood. They meet themselves there, often for the first time.
For a lot of us, that revelation comes with a diagnosis of ADHD, finally providing a full picture of our experience.
And for many, only after the demands of motherhood did the masking and coping strategies we built our whole lives stop working.
The exhaustion you can't explain. The reactions that feel too big. The brain that never quite worked the way you were told it should. Motherhood didn't create any of it. It just stopped letting you hide it.
I was diagnosed at 40. I am still unlearning the story that something was wrong with me. I am still meeting her.
If you are in that meeting right now, please know she was always in there. Motherhood just turned the lights on.
And there is so much good waiting for you in the light.
