Happy Labor Day! 🤍

Our office is closed today in observance of Labor Day — but as midwives, we know that labor doesn’t exactly observe office hours. 😉

We’ll be back to our regular office hours tomorrow. Wishing all of our families a safe and restful Labor Day!

And to any mamas thinking of doing a different kind of labor today… we’re still on the clock for you! 👶🏼✨

✨ Reminder: There’s a range of “normal” when it comes to baby size!

Babies come in all different weights and lengths, and healthy doesn’t have one specific number attached to it. Genetics, gestational age, maternal factors, and plenty of other variables can influence how big or small a baby is at birth.

And while ultrasound can be a helpful tool for monitoring growth, estimated fetal weight is just that…an estimate! Ultrasound measurements, especially later in pregnancy, have a recognized margin of error and don’t always predict birth weight accurately.

So if you’ve ever been surprised by how big or how little your baby actually was compared with the estimate, you’re definitely not alone!

We love kick counts around here, but there seems to be a time of day that moms don't even have to count. Baby just loves to dance every few seconds!

Was it the same time of day for you? Did it vary pregnancy to pregnancy?

We're especially curious - did baby continue the active window after birth?

Yes, this still gets asked! And we understand why—when the cultural norm is that babies are born in a hospital, it’s easy to assume the hospital is what makes all the “official” paperwork happen.

But babies born at home can absolutely receive a birth certificate and Social Security number, just like babies born in a hospital.

The process looks a little different because there isn’t a hospital records department handling the paperwork behind the scenes —just your trusted midwife. You still get all of your trusted government documents, never fear 😇

If you've given birth, we bet you know exactly what both of these sound like.

The point in labor when the sounds change. After hours of waiting, breathing, moving, encouraging, and watching - that change in sound means we're getting close to meeting a new person.

And after baby is here, we get to watch someone we have cared deeply for enter the euphoria of motherhood.

What’s right for one family can be the exact opposite for another. One thing we can all agree on and understand, however, is that it’s a big and emotional decision!

What helped you decide when it was time to grow your family again? Time? Milestones met by youngest child? Something else? A mixture of many things?

How did you decide your baby would stay the baby? Did you know going into it?

Stimulation is a tried and true, completely given method to encourage supply increases. But we know there are other ways to encourage and support our body’s ability to make milk and feed our babies.

Did something else noticeably help you increase your supply during a dip or in your initial nursing phase?
