Is It Anxiety, Depression, or Something Else? 🤔

You've been feeling exhausted.
Your mood is low.
You're irritable.
You can't focus.
Your motivation is gone.

Naturally, you might wonder if you're struggling with anxiety, depression, ADHD, or trauma.

But here's something many people don't consider:
Sometimes medical conditions can mimic mental health symptoms.

Before assuming it's "all in your head," it's important to consider what's happening in your body.

Conditions such as:
☀️ Vitamin D deficiency
🩸 Low iron levels
🦋 Thyroid dysfunction
⚖️ Hormonal imbalances

can contribute to symptoms like:
• Fatigue
• Brain fog
• Difficulty concentrating
• Low mood
• Anxiety
• Irritability

As a therapist, I often encourage clients to approach healing from both a mental health and physical health perspective.

✨ Your symptoms are real, and you deserve answers.

How to ask your doctor:
"I've been experiencing fatigue, low mood, and difficulty concentrating. I'd like to rule out any medical causes. Can we discuss blood work and hormone testing?"

Don't have a primary care provider?
Many urgent care centers, community health clinics, and telehealth medical providers can order basic lab work while you establish ongoing care.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. 💚

Here are a few books I recommend written by Black authors that speak to the mental health experiences of Black Americans. Healing begins with understanding, compassion, and knowing you don’t have to carry everything alone.

What books have supported your healing journey?

1. I’m telling the truth, but lying by Bassey Ikpi
2. Soothe your nerves: The black womans guide to understanding and overcoming anxiety, panic and fear by Dr. Angela Neal-Barnett
3. Willow weep for me: A black woman’s journey through depression by Meri Nana-Ama Danquah
4. My grandmothers hands by Resmaa Menakem
5. The unapologetic guide to black mental health by Rheeda Walker

May is Mental Health Awareness Month 💚

When Black women share their stories about living with mental health challenges like bipolar disorder, it helps break stigma and reminds others they are not alone.

You don’t have to have it all figured out. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

Healing starts with honesty, support, and taking one step at a time.

If you’re ready to begin your mental health journey, schedule your discovery call now at roottothrivetherapy.com to learn more about working together.

https://www.facebook.com/share/18AkLLVFAz/?mibextid=wwXIfr

Kehlani lives with bipolar disorder and shared something powerful about how she protects herself. She tells her family exactly what to watch for: not sleeping, not eating, talking really fast, picking up multiple new hobbies, sudden unexplained energy, dyeing her hair. Her instructions are clear: if you see these signs, call my psychiatrist. I'm in crisis.

This hits different because for so many Black women, crisis doesn't look like falling apart. It looks like over-functioning. Showing up to everything. Saying yes when you should say no. Moving so fast that no one thinks to ask if you're okay. You can be the most productive person in the room while your mental health is unraveling. High-functioning depression and mania are real, and they're exhausting because everyone assumes you have it together.

What Kehlani is modeling is revolutionary: naming your patterns before they spiral. Instead of waiting until everything falls apart, she's given her people a roadmap to step in early. She's normalized needing support and made it easier for her loved ones to offer it. The question isn't whether you have warning signs, it's whether you've identified them and communicated them to people who care about you. What would be on your list?

ADHD or Trauma? ⚡ Nervous System Swings & Executive Function

Trauma doesn’t just live in your thoughts.
It lives in your nervous system.

Many trauma survivors move between two states:
⚡ Sympathetic activation (hyperarousal)
• Anxiety, urgency, racing thoughts
• Restlessness, irritability
• Difficulty focusing because everything feels important

💤 Dorsal vagal shutdown (hypoarousal)
• Numbness, disconnection
• Low energy, “stuck” feeling
• Difficulty starting or completing tasks

When your system is oscillating between these states, executive functioning takes a hit:
• Planning feels overwhelming
• Focus is inconsistent
• Follow-through is hard
• Your thoughts about yourself, others, and the world can become negative or rigid

This can easily be mistaken for ADHD.
But it’s often a nervous system trying to find safety.

For many Black women, these patterns are layered with chronic stress, relational wounds, and the pressure to keep going no matter what.

✨ This isn’t about willpower. It’s about regulation.

👉 If this feels familiar, let’s talk. Schedule a free 15-minute discovery call and begin therapy with support that understands trauma at its root.

ADHD or Trauma? 🧠 The Neuroscience of Trauma & PTSD

Trauma changes the brain.
Not because something is wrong with you—
but because your brain adapted to protect you.

When trauma is present, key systems are impacted:
• The amygdala becomes more sensitive (detecting threat quickly)
• The prefrontal cortex (focus, planning, decision-making) becomes less accessible under stress
• The hippocampus (memory + context) can be affected
• The nervous system stays on alert—even when you’re “safe”

This can lead to:
• Difficulty concentrating
• Feeling scattered or foggy
• Forgetfulness
• Emotional overwhelm or shutdown
Which often gets labeled as ADHD.

But here’s the difference:
✨ Trauma responses are state-dependent—they shift based on how safe or unsafe your nervous system feels.

Understanding this changes everything.

It moves you from:
“What’s wrong with me?”
to
“What happened to me—and how is my body responding?”

ADHD or Trauma? 🤯 Let’s Talk About the Overlap

You’re easily distracted.
You struggle to focus.
You start things and don’t finish them.
Your emotions feel big… or sometimes completely shut off.

And you’re wondering:
👉 Is this ADHD?
👉 Or is something else going on?

Here’s what many people don’t realize:
Trauma—especially attachment trauma and emotional neglect—can look a lot like ADHD.

This is especially true for Black women, whose experiences are often minimized, misunderstood, or mislabeled.

Both ADHD and trauma can show up as:
• Difficulty concentrating
• Forgetfulness
• Emotional reactivity or numbness
• Trouble following through
• Feeling overwhelmed or scattered

But trauma isn’t about attention.
It’s about a nervous system that learned to adapt to stress, unpredictability, or disconnection.

✨ What if your “symptoms” are actually survival strategies?
You deserve support that looks deeper than a label.
👉 If this resonates, schedule a free 15-minute discovery call and let’s explore starting therapy ASAP.

ADHD or Depression? 🌿 Somatic + Yoga-Based Support

When depression impacts the nervous system, healing has to
involve the body — not just thoughts.

In my work at Root to Thrive Integrative Healing, I use somatic psychotherapy and yoga-informed practices to gently support:
• Coming out of shutdown safely
• Rebuilding internal energy
• Increasing body awareness
• Supporting mood regulation
• Improving executive functioning capacity
This isn’t about forcing positivity.

It’s about slowly helping your nervous system move from:
“I can’t”
to
“Maybe I can try.”

Small shifts like:
• Breathwork for hypoarousal
• Grounded movement
• Nervous system tracking
• Restorative yoga practices
• Body-based emotional processing

Over time, these practices can reduce depressive symptoms and restore clarity.

You deserve support that sees the whole you — mind, body, heart, and spirit.

ADHD or Depression? 💤 Dorsal Vagal Shutdown & Executive Function

Sometimes depression isn’t loud.
It’s heavy.
It’s numb.
It’s shut down.

From a nervous system lens, depression often involves dorsal vagal activation — a state of hypoarousal or shutdown.
When the body perceives overwhelm it can’t fight or flee from, it may collapse inward.

In dorsal vagal states, you might experience:
• Low energy
• Disconnection
• “Why bother?” thoughts
• Difficulty initiating tasks
• Brain fog
• Slowed processing

Executive functioning becomes impaired — not because you don’t care, but because your nervous system is conserving energy.

This can be confused with ADHD, especially when:
• Tasks feel impossible to start
• Deadlines are missed
• Motivation feels absent

For many Black women, chronic stress, racialized pressure, and high-functioning survival strategies mask shutdown patterns until burnout hits.

This isn’t a character flaw.
It’s a nervous system response.
Healing requires more than productivity hacks.
It requires regulation.

If this resonates, let’s talk. Schedule a free 15-minute discovery call and we’ll explore how therapy can support your nervous system and mood.

ADHD or Depression? 🧠 The Neuroscience of Depression

Let’s zoom in on the brain for a moment.
Depression isn’t just sadness.

It involves changes in:
• The prefrontal cortex (decision-making, focus, planning)
• The hippocampus (memory)
• The brain’s reward system (motivation + pleasure)
• Stress-response systems like cortisol regulation

When depression is present, the brain’s energy shifts toward survival and withdrawal.

That can look like:
• Brain fog
• Slowed thinking
• Indecisiveness
• Low drive
• Difficulty concentrating

Which can easily be mistaken for ADHD.
But here’s the key difference:

In depression, executive functioning challenges often stem from low activation and depleted internal resources, not from a lifelong pattern of attention differences.

Understanding what’s happening neurologically reduces shame.

You are not lazy.
You are not undisciplined.
Your brain may be under strain.

If you want help untangling your symptoms with someone who understands both depression and systemic stress impacts, reach out for a free 15-minute discovery call to explore therapy options.
