5 Unhealthy Phrases You Might Have Heard as a Kid

We all know that Black and Brown communities have more of a stigma when it comes to seeking treatment for one’s mental health. Here are 5 unhealthy phrases related to mental health that you might have heard around your house as a kid:

“Suck it up. You’ll be fine.”
This phrase invalidates a person’s need to express themselves through crying and teaches them to bottle in their feelings.

“I’ll give you something to cry about.”
This phrase also invalidates a person’s feelings and implies that there are worse things they can be sad about. It might also act as a threat to physical consequences.

“Man up. Stop being weak.”
This phrase teaches young boys that they are supposed to hide their emotions and it equates expressing vulnerability as being weak.

“We don’t talk about family business to strangers.” (Or “What happens in this house stays in this house.”)
This phrase discourages someone from seeking professional help or talking to a trusted adult about problems they may be going through.

“You don’t need to see a shrink. Therapy is for White people.”
This phrase uses outdated language (i.e. “shrink”) and perpetuates the stereotype that only White people need therapy. It continues to stigmatize mental health support in BIPOC communities.

Have you heard any of these phrases before? Are there any you would add to the list? Let us know in the comments!

When you support Bryce’s Back to School Blessings, you’re doing more than donating backpacks, notebooks, and pencils, you’re helping a child walk into the classroom with confidence, dignity, and the belief that their community believes in them.

Every donation, big or small, creates a ripple effect of hope, encouragement, and opportunity.

📚 We’re collecting new school supplies for children ages 5–18 through September 4, 2026.

💙 Can’t shop? Monetary donations are welcome via Zelle, using email [email protected].
💙 DM us for wishlist links or check the bio.

Together, we’re not just filling backpacks, we’re investing in futures, empowering students, and showing our youth that an entire community is standing behind them.

Its brings me pure joy observing Bryce’s commitment to serve the community. At his young age, he looks forward to engaging with the many students that we serve. It’s a pleasure to work alongside my son to implement this valuable initiative.

Thank you for making a difference, one child at a time. 🎒✨

Bebe Moore Campbell Minority Mental Health Awareness Month ‼️‼️

July is Bebe Moore Campbell Minority (BIPOC) Mental Health Awareness Month. Bebe Moore Campbell was a mental health advocate who worked to shed light on the mental health needs of the Black community and other underrepresented communities.

As we begin this month, we encourage you to learn about your family’s mental health history. Sit down with your loved ones and ask the hard questions.

Learning your family mental health history allows you to identify genetic risks, catch early warning signs, and make proactive lifestyle or treatment choices. It shifts your medical approach from reactive to preventive.

Understanding your familial patterns is critical for several reasons:

🤎Early Intervention: Many mental health conditions, such as depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD, and schizophrenia, have hereditary components. Knowing your risks empowers you and your healthcare provider to recognize symptoms early, when treatments are most effective.

🤎Personalized Care: Sharing your family history with a doctor allows them to tailor your care. If certain conditions run in your family, you and your physician can monitor for specific red flags and avoid medications or substances that might trigger an adverse reaction.

🤎Reduced Stigma: Open conversations about mental health and generational trauma help reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness. It fosters a more supportive family environment.

🤎Greater Resilience: Research links understanding intergenerational family history to higher self-esteem, better emotional regulation, and a stronger sense of identity and belonging.

🤎Empowered Lifestyle Choices: If a condition like alcohol misuse or anxiety is prevalent in your lineage, you can make proactive choices—such as prioritizing stress management, seeking early counseling, or limiting alcohol intake.

Knowledge is power! It can also be life-saving!
