When Delilah was 3 1/2 months old, she had open heart surgery to correct a complete atrioventricular (AV) canal.

An AV canal is a congenital heart defect where there are large holes in the walls between the heart’s chambers, and the valves that separate the upper and lower chambers do not form correctly. 🫀

Now, Delilah is thriving! She is into climbing, baby dolls, playing dress up, doing makeup, and playing with her brother. She’s very sassy and independent. She is also starting school this year, which is very exciting! ✨

Congratulations on rocking your echo, Delilah! We’re so proud of the progress you’ve made. ❤️

Dr. Aimee Armstrong, hired in June, and Dr. Stephanie Fuller, who joined Johns Hopkins Children’s Center in December, are co-directors of the Blalock-Taussig-Thomas Pediatric and Congenital Heart Center. They are the only female pairing in the United States of a director of pediatric cardiology and a chief of pediatric and congenital cardiac surgery.

Together, they are transforming the future of pediatric cardiology at Johns Hopkins Medicine while honoring its rich legacy of innovation and leadership. “We want to be the best congenital heart center in the world,” says Dr. Armstrong.

“We want to be the most innovative, to deliver the highest quality care, and to show our patients and families how much we care about them and their experience here.”

Thinking about sending your Hopkins to Heart Camp next year? Check out this testimonial from Carter and his family:

“Carter is an indoor video gaming kid who also loves playing in the pool. This year we talked about Heart Camp and he wanted to go. He thought it would be a great experience! But, he had some anxiety since this was his first time ever being away from his parents and other family members for a week. He’s always had his sister or his father with him, as well as his maternal grandparents.

Carter loved Heart Camp! He texted me the second night stating he would text me every day. He did not. That tells me even though he missed me, he was having so much fun and I am okay with it! There was always a variety of activities for Carter to choose from.

It was also very comforting having a medical team there who understood his defects so if something happened, he would be well taken care of.

Carter is definitely ready for Heart Camp next year!”

Earlier this week, the Heart Center team met for book club! We enjoyed delicious pizza at Angeli's Pizzeria and discussed our latest read by TJ Klune, The House in the Cerulean Sea. 🌊

“Linus Baker is a by-the-book case worker in the Department in Charge of Magical Youth. He’s tasked with determining whether six dangerous magical children at an orphanage are likely to bring about the end of the world. Arthur Parnassus is the master of the orphanage. He would do anything to keep the children safe, even if it means the world will burn.

The House in the Cerulean Sea is an enchanting love story, masterfully told, about the profound experience of discovering an unlikely family in an unexpected place—and realizing that family is yours.”

Some of us loved it, and some of us didn’t. But if you like contemporary fantasy, you’ll love this book! ⭐️⭐️⭐️

On Sunday, the Heart Center team and patient families got together at Spring Meadow Farms in Upperco to celebrate National Ice Cream Day! 🍦

Not only was there delicious ice cream to indulge in (courtesy of The Bus Stop), there were also cute animals to pet, bubbles 🫧 to play with, and plenty of other family-friendly activities to partake in!

Thank you to everyone for coming out to enjoy the beautiful afternoon. We love opportunities like this to get together with our heart families and celebrate life outside the hospital! ❤️
