On October 15, we celebrate the birthday and extraordinary legacy of Marty Mann, founder of the organization that became the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (NCADD).

Marty was ahead of her time. In 1944, she lead with a groundbreaking mission: educate the public that alcoholism is a health issue and that people deserve dignity, help and hope. During her leadership, she also:

• Published Primer on Alcoholism in 1950.
• Helped advance some of the nation’s earliest workplace programs addressing alcoholism, working with companies including Con Edison and DuPont.
• Spent decades challenging stigma and educating the public about alcoholism and recovery.

More than 80 years later, NCADD continues the work Marty began.

On what would be her 122nd birthday, we invite you to .

Could GLP-1 medications play a future role in addiction treatment?

GLP-1 medications such as semaglutide are best known for treating diabetes and obesity, but researchers are increasingly studying their potential impact on alcohol and other substance use disorders.

Because GLP-1 medications affect brain pathways involved in reward and cravings, researchers are exploring whether they may also reduce the desire to use alcohol and other substances. Early studies are promising. Research has found associations between semaglutide use and reductions in alcohol consumption and craving, as well as potential effects involving to***co, cannabis and opioid-related outcomes.

These medications are not currently approved as treatments for substance use disorders, and much more research is needed. But the findings represent an important and developing area of addiction science — and another reminder of why continued investment in evidence-based addiction research matters.
