When people ask Stacy Hurt how she managed stage IV cancer while caring nonstop for her son Emmett, she points to the millions of people carrying heavy loads of their own, from mothers and aunts to volleyball coaches, teachers and nurses working double shifts. Cancer free since 2015, Stacy now speaks up as a patient advocate for colorectal cancer and rare diseases.

The World Health Organization describes lived experience of mental health conditions as a vital form of expertise, one that training and research on their own cannot provide. That idea shapes this year's World Mental Health Day on October 10, and it matters in clinical research too, where the people who take part help show what really works.

Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death worldwide, yet the World Heart Federation notes that fewer than 20 countries have a standalone national plan to tackle it. This World Heart Day, September 29, asks people to see the signs, protect their hearts and demand action from the decision makers who can change that. Research plays its part as well, and every advance in heart care has relied on people willing to take part in clinical studies.

If you have ever wondered what a clinical trial should feel like from the inside, Andrea and David have a clear answer. Since Andrea's ALS diagnosis at 33, Team Drea, the nonprofit formed around her, has brought in more than $850,000 for research, and Andrea now sits on Parexel's North American Patient Advocacy Council. A clinical research unit is somewhere volunteers may spend several days at a time, so our Baltimore clinic was designed with that in mind. Set within MedStar Harbor Hospital in South Baltimore, the recently renovated 72-bed unit even has a Recreational Activities Coordinator, a role created to make each stay more engaging and comfortable. And at every screening visit, the informed consent document is reviewed and signed before any study procedure takes place.
