In surgical oncology, the critical window of time between diagnosis and the start of treatment can close quickly, especially for aggressive or complex digestive cancers. While the national average time to treatment is nearly 30 days, we are working to reduce that by 30%.

Speed and quality shouldn’t be opposites. In fact, both are vital part of quality cancer care. Learn from Dr. Mihir M. Shah why “treatment yesterday” is always better than “treatment tomorrow.”

Learn why MedStar Health is reducing the time from digestive cancer diagnosis to treatment.

👏 Kudos to Mechell Barney-Morris, Pharmacy Technician, for going above and beyond!

A physician placed a late request for a large quantity of Lovenox needed for a patient discharge close to the end of the day. Unfortunately, the Outpatient Pharmacy at MedStar Harbor Hospital did not have the medication in stock, creating an urgent situation with closing time quickly approaching.

After outreach to neighboring pharmacies, the Outpatient Pharmacy at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital confirmed they had the medication available. Without hesitation, Mechell stepped in, drove from Union to Harbor, and personally delivered the medication so it could be dispensed to the patient in time for discharge.

Because of Mechell’s quick action, teamwork, and dedication, the patient was able to receive their medication and discharge as planned.

This is a true example of collaboration, urgency, and going above and beyond for patient care. Mechell’s willingness to jump in and support both her teammates and our patients reflects the values we strive to uphold every day.

Thank you, Mechell, for your outstanding teamwork and commitment! 💙
