Did you know? A minimum-wage worker in Maryland would need to work 100 hours a week to afford a modest two-bedroom rental.

That's according to the 's 2026 report.

With housing costs stretching family budgets, helping Marylanders remain in their homes is an important part of addressing our housing affordability crisis.

Maryland's Access to Counsel in Evictions (ACE) law gives eligible renters facing eviction the right to free legal representation. Lawyers can help renters understand their rights, defend their homes, and explore options to remain housed.

And the benefits extend beyond individual households.

According to an independent evaluation by Stout Risius Ross, every $1 invested in ACE generated an estimated $3.04 in fiscal and economic benefits for Maryland, totaling $46.7 million in one year.

Keeping Marylanders housed benefits us all.

Maryland can't build its way out of a housing crisis while families lose the homes they already have.

Affordability starts with affordable housing. A report found that nearly half of Maryland renters spend more than 30% of their income on rent. That leaves less money for food, healthcare, childcare, and other everyday expenses.

Building more affordable housing is essential. But helping Marylanders keep the homes they already have matters, too.

That's where Maryland's Access to Counsel in Evictions (ACE) law comes in.

ACE gives eligible renters facing eviction the right to a free lawyer to defend their rights and work toward staying housed.

Maryland has brought ACE to full implementation statewide.

When a renter faces eviction, a lawyer can explain their rights, help them respond in court, and explore options that may allow them to remain housed. That's how legal representation can support housing stability.

In the state of Maryland, people under guardianship do NOT automatically lose the right to vote. During the guardianship process it may be determined that the individual under guardianship can't communicate a desire to vote, but guardianship does not take that right away without that specific decision made in court.

That means that friends, relatives, staff or doctors can't decide you are unable vote because of your disability. You have the right to vote!
