A kidney transplant can change your life, and the support you receive along the way can make all the difference.

After diagnosis with the rare kidney disease IgM nephropathy, Monique McDowell received a kidney transplant at the University of Maryland Transplant Center in 2023. "The clock was always ticking. Now it is not."

For most of his life, Ese Sifo lived with the pain and uncertainty of sickle cell disease. His wife Mari watched the toll it took, always wondering what the future held.

This year, Ese received a breakthrough gene therapy at the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) using his own genetically engineered stem cells. He describes it as a door finally opening after being closed his entire life.

UMMC is the only hospital in Maryland authorized to offer this treatment, part of a program built to expand access and address the disparities that have long affected patients with sickle cell disease.
