When people tell the story of IVF, Jean Purdy’s name is too often left out—but her contributions helped change reproductive medicine forever.

A nurse, embryologist, and scientist, Jean helped run the laboratory, meticulously documented years of research, and co-authored 26 scientific papers alongside Robert Edwards and Patrick Steptoe. In 1978, she witnessed the first embryo develop into what would become Louise Brown, the world’s first baby born through IVF.

Her role was so essential that when she stepped away temporarily to care for her mother, the research came to a halt. She later helped establish Bourn Hall, the world’s first dedicated IVF clinic.

Although Robert Edwards was awarded the Nobel Prize in 2010, Jean had already passed away, and Nobel Prizes are not awarded posthumously. For many years, her contributions were overlooked, but today her place in IVF history is finally being recognized.

Millions of families exist because three pioneers refused to give up:
Jean Purdy. Robert Edwards. Patrick Steptoe.

Today, we honor Jean Purdy—a woman whose dedication, brilliance, and perseverance helped make parenthood possible for millions. 🤍

July is Fibroid Awareness Month. 💜

Uterine fibroids (leiomyomas) are the most common benign tumors of the uterus, affecting up to 70–80% of women by age 50. While many fibroids cause no symptoms, others can significantly impact quality of life.

Common symptoms include:
• Heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding
• Pelvic pain, pressure, or fullness
• Frequent urination
• Constipation
• Pain during in*******se
• Reproductive concerns, including infertility or pregnancy complications in some cases

Treatment depends on the size and location of the fibroids, symptom severity, and a patient’s reproductive goals. Options range from observation and medication to minimally invasive procedures and surgery.

If you’re experiencing abnormal bleeding or persistent pelvic symptoms, don’t ignore them. A thorough evaluation by your OB/GYN can help determine the cause and identify the most appropriate treatment plan.

Awareness leads to earlier diagnosis, informed decisions, and better outcomes.

Our team had a wonderful time participating in GBMC’s annual Father’s Day 5K & 1-Mile Fun Walk, a beloved community tradition that raises critical funds to support the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Every step helps provide specialized care and equipment for some of our tiniest patients and their families.

We’re especially proud of Dr. Erdman and Dr. Morrell for representing our practice, and we want to give a huge congratulations to Dr. Erdman’s daughter, Alex, who proudly earned the title of top GBMC female runner! 🏃🏻‍♀️🎉

Congratulations to everyone who participated and helped make a difference for the incredible babies and families cared for in the GBMC NICU. 💙

🦠 June is CMV Awareness Month. 🦠

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a common virus and the leading infectious cause of birth defects in the United States. While many people have no symptoms, CMV infection during pregnancy can sometimes affect a developing baby.

Simple steps—like washing your hands frequently and avoiding contact with saliva from young children—can help reduce the risk.

Awareness and prevention are key. If you’re pregnant or planning a pregnancy, talk with your healthcare provider to learn more about CMV and ways to help protect your baby.
