A rare postoperative complication became a reminder of the impact of integrated rehabilitation care.🏥

The case highlights how the setting of rehabilitation can directly influence outcomes for medically complex patients and underscores the value of hospital-attached IRFs in managing unexpected complications.

This clinical vignette follows a patient who experienced bowel evisceration with fascial failure during inpatient rehabilitation, a life-threatening emergency that required immediate surgical intervention. Rapid recognition and escalation were possible because the patient was receiving care in a hospital-based inpatient rehabilitation facility, where multidisciplinary teams and specialty services were readily available.

This case study is being prepared for submission to the American Journal of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (AJPM&R) as a Clinical Vignette to raise awareness of the differential diagnosis for abdominal incisional drainage and the systems-level advantages of hospital-based rehabilitation care.

👧🎥 A look inside the Child Norms Study as data collection is underway!

We’re excited to have the Child Norms Project up and running at the Pediatric Motor Development Lab. Through each visit, our team is working to better understand balance and postural control in children during key stages of development.

Every participant helps contribute to a greater understanding of pediatric motor development, and we’re grateful to the families helping move this research forward 💙

May is National Mobility Awareness Month!

As May comes to a close, we’re proud to recognize the importance of movement, independence, and accessibility across the lifespan. 🚶‍♀️🦿🧠

At the ABBEL Research Division, our team is committed to advancing movement science through biomechanics, engineering, and rehabilitation research. From pediatric motor development and gait analysis to wearable technology and rehabilitation innovation, our work focuses on improving how movement is measured, understood, and supported.

Throughout May, we’ve celebrated the impact mobility has on quality of life — and the clinicians, researchers, participants, and families helping move rehabilitation science forward every day. 💙

Congratulations to our Research Communications Intern, Daylin Smith! 🎉

Daylin, a Graphic Design student at Stevenson University, has been assisting the ABBEL Research Division since January. Throughout his internship, he has supported the team through research communications, creative design work, and content development while gaining valuable experience in research, collaboration, and professional communication.

As part of his internship experience, Daylin also developed and presented a final presentation highlighting the projects he contributed to, the skills he developed, and his experience working alongside the ABBEL research team.

We are proud to congratulate him on completing 120+ hours with the research team and thank him for his dedication, creativity, and contributions to ABBEL!

📚 Resident Journal Club – May

This session, our residents highlighted two engaging articles focused on sports medicine and pain management interventions:

Dr. Asha Stegall (PGY-2) presented research on platelet-rich plasma injections as a treatment option for Achilles tendinopathy and plantar fasciitis in athletes.

Dr. Lisa D’Souza (PGY-2) presented a study comparing ultrasound-guided suprascapular and axillary nerve blocks versus suprascapular nerve block alone for patients with frozen shoulder.

Great discussions and continued commitment to evidence-based rehabilitation care! 👏✨
