Smiles, laughter, and unforgettable memories filled the third annual Upbeat Hearts Camp from the University of Maryland Golisano Children's Hospital!

Designed for children living with congenital heart disease, many of whom underwent open-heart surgery as infants, the camp gave campers the chance to enjoy classic summer activities like water games, hiking, dancing, arts and crafts, science activities, and plenty of sweet treats, all while connecting with other children who share similar experiences.

Founded by Dr. Thomas Chin, Co-Director of the Children's Heart Program at University of Maryland Golisano Children's Hospital and Head of Pediatric Cardiology at University of Maryland School of Medicine, Upbeat Hearts Camp is made possible by the dedication of our pediatric cardiology team and the generosity of donors who help create an unforgettable experience for every camper.

Back for its 12th year, Camp Open Arms is giving children with limb differences an unforgettable week filled with friendship, confidence, and fun as campers enjoy dancing, a movie night with Trunk or Treat, and a family outing to Hersheypark. This year’s theme is Candyland.

Founded by Dr. Joshua Abzug, pediatric orthopaedic surgeon at University of Maryland Golisano Children's Hospital (UMGCH) and professor of orthopaedics and pediatrics at University of Maryland School of Medicine, the free camp is a collaboration between UMGCH and the University of Maryland Department of Orthopaedics. Made possible through generous donations from individuals and organizations, Camp Open Arms welcomes children from across the country for this one-of-a-kind experience.

This week, University of Maryland Medical Center proudly celebrated National Night Out with an evening dedicated to strengthening community connections. Neighbors from across West Baltimore enjoyed live music, games, food, giveaways, access to valuable health information and community resources, and received more than 150 bags filled with school supplies to help prepare students for the upcoming school year.

We were also honored to welcome State's Attorney Ivan Bates, Police Commissioner Richard Worley, Baltimore City Council President Zeke Cohen, Baltimore City Health Commissioner Dr. Michelle Taylor, and 11th District Councilman Zac Blanchard, who joined UMMC leaders in celebrating this special event at our Midtown Campus.

Additionally, our Community Health team, along with University of Maryland Golisano Children's Hospital's TEAMS, Safe Kids Baltimore, and R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center's Violence Prevention team, participated in National Night Out at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. Together, they connected with local residents through giveaways, free educational materials, and information about programs and services that support healthier communities.

“Children with limb differences often are teased or feel like they can’t do things that other kids can do. They are often the target of bullying,” said Dr. Joshua Abzug, Deputy Surgeon-in-Chief at the University of Maryland Golisano Children's Hospital and founder of Camp Open Arms. “This is a safe place where they are accepted and can try some things they thought they couldn’t do.”

Camp Open Arms was back for its 12th year, giving children with limb differences the opportunity to build confidence, make lifelong friendships, and create unforgettable memories.

Last week, children from across the region and from as far away as Minnesota and Florida came together at Camp Open Arms, a free camp for children with limb differences run by Dr. Joshua Abzug, University of Maryland Golisano Children's Hospital (UMGCH) Deputy Surgeon-in-Chief.

This year's Candy Land-themed camp was filled with unforgettable moments that included the Truffle Shuffle Dance Party, chocolate-making, a rainbow-colored water slide, a candy cannon that blasted out sweet treats, movie night with a Trunk or Treat, and a family trip to Hersheypark. Every day brought new adventures, creative activities, and opportunities for campers to enjoy themselves.

More than just a summer camp, Camp Open Arms is a place where children discover new possibilities, form lifelong friendships, and celebrate what makes them unique. It is staffed by volunteers and supported by UMGCH, the University of Maryland Department of Orthopaedics, along with many individuals and organizations.

There's not much that beats ice cream on a hospital unit — except maybe ice cream served by an Orioles legend.

Chris and Jill Davis, and their kids, spent the afternoon at the University of Maryland Golisano Children's Hospital, serving up scoops and spending time with patients, families, and our care teams. The visit comes just ahead of Chris's induction into the Baltimore Orioles Hall of Fame this Saturday — a well-earned honor for someone who has shown up for Maryland families on and off the field.
