💧 Why Hydration Matters After Oral Surgery 💧

Staying hydrated is one of the most important parts of a smooth recovery after oral surgery. Drinking plenty of water helps your body heal, reduces dry mouth, and keeps you feeling better overall.

🚫 Important reminder: avoid drinking through straws while healing. The suction can disturb the protective blood clot at the surgical site, increasing bleeding and potentially causing a painful complication known as dry socket.

Stick to sipping water gently and follow your post-op instructions for the best recovery possible! 🦷

🦷 Parents: When Should Teens Get Wisdom Teeth Evaluated?

Most teens should have their wisdom teeth checked between ages 16–18 — even if there’s no pain yet. Early evaluation can help spot:

✔️ Impacted teeth
✔️ Infection risks
✔️ Future issues

A simple exam and X-ray with a dentist can help determine whether monitoring or removal is the best next step. Early planning often leads to an easier recovery and fewer complications later on. Your dentist can send us a referral and recommendation, which will be reviewed and discussed during your consultation.

Severe pain a few days after a tooth extraction may be a sign of Dry socket — a condition that occurs when the protective blood clot at the extraction site is lost too soon during healing.

To help reduce your risk:

• Avoid smoking or va**ng
• Don’t use straws
• Avoid forceful rinsing or spitting for the first few days
• Follow post-op instructions carefully

Symptoms can include throbbing pain, bad taste or odor, and pain radiating to the ear or jaw.
If you think you may have dry socket, contact our office for evaluation and care.

Wisdom tooth extraction is one of the most common procedures performed by oral and maxillofacial surgeons — and for good reason. Impacted wisdom teeth can harm nearby teeth, irritate the gums, or lead to infection and bone loss. Removing them early ensures a smoother procedure and faster recovery.
