John Brooks, 73, unexpectedly passed away August 12, 2026 while at his home with his wife Sheila in Barnwell, SC. A Memorial Service will be held 6pm, Monday, August 17 in the chapel at Dyches Funeral Home in Barnwell SC, with Pastor Ken Dobson officiating. A private burial will follow.
John Michael Brooks was born February 25, 1953 in Walker County community, where his family had roots going back generations.
He established his own roots by starting his own family and a career at a large manufacturing plant. This career transferred him to an even smaller town in South Carolina where he met and married the love of his life, Sheila Patricia Jordan of Barnwell, SC.
John was full of Dad jokes and puns, always making everyone laugh and Sheila shaking her head in exasperation. He always “used to work with a guy”, as his stories always started out, and he was always up for an adventure, and by adventure, we mean trying a new restaurant. Life wasn’t without its hardships, but John lived it to the fullest, and this love for life spilled out onto those around him.
He is survived by his loving wife Sheila Patricia Jordan Brooks of Barnwell, SC; his remaining four children, John Christopher Brooks, Johnny Heyward (Ashley) Tedder, Tracie Lynn (Jeremy) Hicks, and Patricia Anne (Joseph) Harter; numerous sisters in laws and nieces and nephews; Thomas Baxley (Roxana) whom he loved like a son, and the apples of his eye, his grandchildren, Kendall (Dave) Lott, Ashley Harter, Alyssa Grace Tedder, Tristan John Harter, Jaxson Gregory Tedder, Grayson James Brooks, Jayson Michael Tedder and Lincoln Shaelyn Hicks; and Great Grandchildren Mila and Owen Lott.
He was preceded in death by his son, Jeremy Michael Brooks (Shelly), his mother Mary Ruth Eubanks, his father, John Walter Brooks and his brother William Thomas Brooks.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in John Brooks' memory to the Ronald McDonald House at
2901 Colonial Dr.
Columbia, SC. 29203
