💙 Helping vs. Enabling: Sometimes the difference is hard to see.
When you love someone struggling with substance use, your instinct may be to protect them, fix the problem, or prevent them from experiencing consequences. But sometimes what feels like helping can unintentionally make it easier for the cycle to continue.
Helping can look like: supporting treatment, setting healthy boundaries, and encouraging accountability.
Enabling can look like: repeatedly covering consequences, providing money that supports substance use, or making excuses for harmful behavior.
Setting boundaries doesn’t mean you’ve stopped loving them. You can love someone deeply and still say, “I can’t support this behavior.”
Families need support, too. If you have questions about treatment options for someone you love, we’re here to help.
