Absent any severe weather, the Memorial Day Parade in Bath is scheduled for 10:30am, Monday, May 25th. The parade forms up at the Smith Tobey Post 21 American Legion on Congress Ave. The route is Lincoln St, Centre St, Front St, and ending at the library where there will be a wreath laying ceremony in City park at the monument there. There will be a brief ceremony at the monument at Centre/High Streets intersection during the parade. The ceremonies may include a three volley salute (blank firing) and the playing of Taps. This is a somber event to pay our respects to fallen service members. Please be respectful. Flags should be at half-staff from sunrise to noon. Motorists should prepare for traffic delays and/or temporary detours. No parking will be allowed on the parade route beginning late Sunday night until after the parade (noon on Monday), this includes the portion of Washington St along City Park (at library) in front of the monument.

May is Military Appreciation Month, a time to recognize the service, sacrifice and dedication of all who wear and have worn the uniform. 40 million men and women have served. All races and faiths, diversity and unity have made us strong. A Gold Star lives on in many U.S. family legacies. Today, on Sunday, September 28, we recognize Gold Star Families. The day is for honoring families of those who have received The Gold Star, the military award no one wants. The award commemorates the tragic death of a military member who has perished while in the line of duty and hopes to provide a level of comfort to the parents and families that are left behind. Since World War 1, a “Gold Star Family” has signified a family that has lost one of its members in combat. The family can display a Gold Star Service Flag for any military family members who have died from any honorable cause . Each gold star on the flag signifies a death. Though today only around one percent of the country is involved in military service, compared to the twelve percent during World War II, there are still a significant number of surviving Gold Star families.
