šŸŽ¤ Greaux Healthy Asks: Protein Edition

According to our kid expert, protein helps you stay healthy, build strong muscles…and maybe even avoid cooties. šŸ˜‚šŸ’Ŗ

While we can’t make any promises about the cooties, protein does play an important role in helping kids grow and thrive. Pairing protein-rich foods with plenty of movement helps support growing muscles, bones, and active bodies.

Protein can come from many everyday foods your family may already enjoy, like eggs, milk, yogurt, beans, chicken, nuts and more.

Healthy habits don’t have to start with big changes. Sometimes, one small shift can make a difference.

Protein plays an important role in helping children grow and thrive. It supports muscle and bone growth, helps keep the immune system strong, and can help kids stay fueled for learning, play, and physical activity.

Most families don’t need to count protein grams. Instead, try including a healthy source of protein at meals and snacks throughout the day:
🄚 Eggs
šŸ„› Milk, yogurt, and cheese
🫘 Beans and lentils
šŸ— Chicken and turkey
🄜 Nuts, seeds, and nut butters

Protein is just one part of a balanced eating pattern. Pair it with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and other nutritious foods to help give growing kids the nutrients they need.

September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, and awareness is only the beginning.

More than 1 in 3 Louisiana children ages 6–17 have overweight or obesity. Childhood obesity is a complex, chronic disease, and improving children’s health takes all of us.

Families can build healthy routines at home. Educators can help create healthier school environments. Healthcare providers can identify obesity early and connect families with compassionate, evidence-based care. Communities can help make proven programs and resources more accessible.

At Pennington Biomedical Research Center, researchers are working to better understand how to prevent and treat childhood obesity. Through Greaux Healthy, we’re helping put that science into action across Louisiana.

This September, follow along as we share practical ways you can help build healthier futures for Louisiana children.

šŸ’š Move More Monday šŸ’š

What was your favorite activity to do after school as a kid? We asked Jacob Mey, PhD, Clinical Nutrition Researcher at Pennington Biomedical Research Center (and dad of two). Here's what he had to say.

Dr. Mey also shared advice for keeping your kids active outside of school: make it fun, play outside, choose activities that your kids enjoy.

The benefits of regular physical activity go beyond just physical health. Regular movement can also support kids’ mood, focus, and overall well-being.
