New data support maternal RSV vaccination to protect infants

A study presented at the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases' Global Congress associated maternal vaccination against respiratory syncytial virus with an 81.3% reduction in infant hospitalizations when given at least two weeks before birth. The study analyzed data on almost 290,000 infants born from September 2024 to March 2025.

(It is a one-time, monoclonal antibody injection that protects against respiratory syncytial virus, better known as RSV. We highly recommend this immunization for all babies that are eligible to receive it.

Please note that if the immunization was administered to Mom during pregnancy fourteen days or more before delivery, the baby is already immunized and does not require or qualify for an (additional) injection.)

Children worldwide consume more sugar-sweetened drinks

A study published in The BMJ found that children and adolescents around the world consumed, on average, 23% more sugar-sweetened beverages in 2018 than they did in 1990. Researchers noted that older children and adolescents consumed more than younger children, as did people living in urban areas, compared with rural areas.

Childhood overweight/obesity has increased dramatically in the last 30 years, fueled by sugared drinks and greater access to high calorie food.

Please limit these drinks for your children and encourage only drinking water, not juice, soft drinks or sweet tea.

Early peanut consumption may prevent allergy later

Feeding children peanuts regularly from infancy to age five has been shown to reduce the rate of peanut allergy in adolescence, according to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine. The follow-up study demonstrated sustained benefits of early peanut consumption, with only 4.4% of early peanut consumers developing allergies by age 13, compared to 15.4% of those who avoided peanuts.

After infants have mastered a few puréed foods, we recommend starting around 6 months age introducing peanut butter to infants mixed into a cereal (rice or oats).
