This May, we recognize Pediatric Feeding Disorder Awareness Month. The numbers demand our attention.
1 in 4 children experience feeding difficulties, making it one of the most prevalent yet under-recognized childhood conditions. PFD encompasses difficulties with eating and drinking that impact a child's health, nutrition, and quality of life and it can present at every stage of development.
Red flags 🚩🚩 by age:
Infants: Poor latch, pain with feeding, feeding refusal, slow feeding rate, noisy feeding, coughing, low weight gain, respiratory distress during feeds
Toddlers: Extreme food selectivity, mealtime distress, gagging or vomiting with new textures, difficulty chewing or swallowing
Older children: Nutritional gaps, social avoidance around food, significant anxiety at mealtimes, sudden changes in feeding habits
The pathway is clear: awareness generates recognition, recognition drives referrals, and referrals connect children to the interdisciplinary care that works.
Early intervention isn't just beneficial, it's transformative. And it starts with someone knowing what to look for.
Share this month. Talk about PFD. Be the reason a family finally gets answers.
