If you’ve been seeing me talk about the Quietly Radical Reflection Circles, they grew out of this.

You Have Nothing to Prove is a 24-principle reflection journal for people who are tired of proving their worth through overfunctioning, people-pleasing, and self-neglect.

Each principle is an invitation to question some of the rules you may have learned about what you owe other people—and what you’re allowed to give yourself.

The Reflection Circles are one way I’m creating space to sit with those ideas together.

I’ve been thinking about the difference between working on a relationship and becoming responsible for keeping it alive.

Sometimes self-abandonment does not look like neglecting yourself. It looks like explaining more, adjusting more, forgiving more, repairing more—and hoping that if you keep trying, the relationship will finally become what you know it could be.

My latest blog post explores mutuality, unequal relational labor, and the point where devotion can begin to cost you too much.

Shameka L. Mitchell, LCSW is a clinical social worker, therapist, and writer based near Baton Rouge, Louisiana. As founder of The Chrysalis Center, she specializes in relational and attachment trauma. Her work challenges longstanding assumptions that teach women to abandon themselves in the name of love, loyalty, and “keeping the peace.”
As a mother, therapist, and advocate, Shameka is committed to disrupting inherited patterns of guilt, people-pleasing, and emotional self-neglect. Her work is deeply personal, rooted in her own journey of learning to choose Self over the roles others expected her to perform.

When she is not in session with clients, Shameka writes about relational dynamics, gives mom-life her best efforts, and maintains her sanity through yoga and rollerskating.
