In honor of yesterday's National Children's Mental Health Awareness Day, here's a glimpse of how we connect, hope, heal, and grow here at The TheraPlayce. 🫶

Yesterday our community experienced a mass shooting only 1 mile from our office. We did our best to carry on with sessions as normal as sirens blared, ambulances sped, and helicopters hovered overhead. There were many tough conversations and questions with no easy answers.
Today, I'm sharing some of my favorite picture books to help families process events like what happened yesterday afternoon.

To teach and give words for the unexplainable:
-On the News: Our First Talk About Tragedy by Dr. Jillian Roberts
-Something Happened in Our Park: Standing Together After Gun Violence by Ann Hazzard, Marianne Celano, & Marietta Collins

To empathize with experience and reduce helplessness:
-Come With Me by Holly M. McGhee
-The Breaking News by Sarah Lynne Reul

To normalize and validate traumatic stress reactions:
-A Terrible Thing Happened: A Story for Children Who Have Witnessed Violence or Trauma by Margaret M. Holmes
-Once I Was Very Very Scared by Chandra Ghosh Ippen

To build hope and sense of community:
-Most People by Michael Leannah
-I Am We: A Book of Community by Susan Verde

I hope these books help your loved ones navigate what are becoming increasingly common events in our communities. Please reach out for more resources or if you feel your little one would benefit from more support. ❤️

Happy New Year to all of our families and friends! Thank you to everyone who supported us last year. We are so grateful for every family who put trust in us (Ms. Josie and Winnie!!) with their children. Winnie and I are so excited to see where 2026 takes us. Our goal is to reach even more families and continue to watch all of our kids hope, heal, and grow! 🥰🥳

📣 November Food Drive! 📣 Winnie and I are excited to announce that we are hosting a Food Drive for the first 3 weeks of this month in support of the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank. Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank has been serving not only our area, but 11 parishes in our state for over 40 years. Join us through November 20th by bringing along what you can to your sessions and leaving them in the boxes in the waiting room. Contact Ms. Josie at [email protected] with any questions. Thank you! 😀

🥳🎉This week Winnie and I celebrated one whole YEAR of The TheraPlayce! 🥳🎉 What an incredible year it has been! Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all of our families-past, present, and future-who have entrusted me with what they hold most dear-the well being of their children. I am so, so grateful and blessed that this is what I (and Winnie!) get to do every day. Here's to many more years of connecting, hoping, healing, and growing! 💗

New backpacks, sharpened pencils… and big feelings. 🎒💛

Back-to-school season can bring excitement and anxiety — for both kids and their grown-ups.
In my latest blog post, I’m sharing 5 powerful picture books I use in pediatric therapy, plus practical, concrete tips for easing separation anxiety and helping your child feel brave, connected, and ready to learn.

From The Kissing Hand to Riley the Brave Makes it to School, these stories open the door for connection, reassurance, and emotional growth.

🧠💛🎭 Tiny puppets, big healing this week at The TheraPlayce!

In child therapy, play is the language, and EMDR can be the path for so many kids experiencing trauma and distress. When paired with play therapy models like one of my personal favorites, Paris Goodyear-Brown’s TraumaPlay®, EMDR becomes even more accessible for young kids. Through puppet theaters, story-making, and bilateral stimulation (like our new Bumble BLS bracelets 🐝), children can safely process stressful and traumatic events, express big feelings like fear or anger, and build new beliefs rooted in hope and resilience.

Play isn’t just fun—it’s transformative and healing here at The TheraPlayce. 🌈🧸

Happy Hump Day from our play room and these two blonde little ladies! How lucky am I that I get to spend my days with faces like these!

In light of recent harmful narratives about Autism, it’s time to re-center the conversation on truth, dignity, and respect.

As a therapist who works with neurodivergent children and families, I want to be clear:

❤️ Autistic people are not broken.
❤️ They are not tragedies.
❤️ They are whole, worthy human beings.

Let’s replace fear with facts:
🚫 Autism is not caused by vaccines.
🚫 It’s not a disease or an epidemic.
🚫 It doesn’t destroy families.
🚫 It doesn’t need to be “cured.”

✅ Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder with a strong genetic basis.
✅ Autistic people can live full, successful lives—with the right understanding and support.
✅ Some face significant challenges—including anxiety, depression, sensory struggles, and more—and they deserve compassionate care backed by research and science, not stigma.

We need more access to services. More research that centers lived experience. More professionals trained in neurodiversity-affirming care. And more funding that meets people where they are.

💡 Autism is not something to fear—it is something to understand.
Every autistic person—regardless of support needs—is inherently valuable.

♾️ Let’s build a world that includes and uplifts everyone. Let’s reject narratives that paint autism as a catastrophe. Let’s reject language that dehumanizes. Let’s replace fear with facts, understanding, and compassionate action.
