Having a small cut and going into coastal water does not mean you’ll develop a Vibrio infection. These infections are still uncommon.

But you shouldn’t ignore the exposure either.

If a wound comes into contact with salt or brackish water, wash it thoroughly with soap and clean running water. If you know you have an open wound before heading into the water, the safest option is to stay out until it heals. If contact can’t be avoided, cover the wound completely with a waterproof bandage.

Think you can spot a bad oyster? Don't be so sure. Vibrio can be undetected, meaning you can't taste, smell, or see it.
You may have heard the old rule about only eating oysters in months with an “R,” but Vibrio risk isn’t quite that simple.

If you develop diarrhea, vomiting, stomach pain, fever, or chills after eating raw or undercooked shellfish, know what to watch for and when to seek care. Learn more: link in story.
