Balancing Your Immune System

Balancing Your Immune System My wife & I got curious about our health and ended up learning a lot about omega balance and inflammation.

I share what I find here — and if you're interested in either improving your own numbers or learning how I do this, just message me...

Immunity isn't built overnight — it's built at the table.
The foods that actually support your immune system aren't exotic. Vitamin C from citrus and kiwi, sulfur compounds in garlic, gut support from yogurt, anti-inflammatory backup from ginger and turmeric — these are everyday ingredients doing real work.
The common thread? Most of this comes down to reducing chronic inflammation and feeding a healthy gut. Diet is one piece of that picture — right alongside things like your omega-6 to omega-3 balance, which most people have never actually tested.
What's on your plate already doing some of this work for you?

Do You Know How Well It's Working?
If you're using any brand of omega-3 right now, do you know how well it's working for you?
You may be taking it every day.You may even be seeing results.
But are those results as effective as they could be?
Is it personalized to YOU — dosage matched to your size and weight — or is everyone taking the same amount?
Is it doing what you actually need it to do?
And here's the real question: is it test-based? Is there proof it's working — or proof that it's not?
Taking a supplement and knowing it's working aren't the same thing.
The label tells you what you're taking. It doesn't tell you what's happening inside your body.
So here's the decision:Are you comfortable assuming it's working, or do you want to know?
That's a decision each of us has to make for ourselves.
If you're curious what "test-based" actually looks like in practice, happy to talk it through...

1. What exactly is an omega-3?

One thing I’ve learned is that “omega-3” isn’t actually one single fatty acid.

It’s a family of fatty acids, but the three we hear about most are ALA, EPA and DHA.

ALA is found mainly in plant foods such as flaxseed, chia seeds and walnuts.

EPA and DHA are found primarily in fatty fish and other marine foods such as salmon, sardines and mackerel.

Our bodies can convert some ALA into EPA and DHA, but that conversion is limited. That’s one reason marine sources are important when we’re talking specifically about EPA and DHA.

And these aren’t just numbers on a supplement label. EPA and DHA become incorporated into cell membranes and play important roles in normal functions throughout the body.

I used to think omega-3 basically meant “take some fish oil.”

I’ve learned there’s a lot more to understand than that.

Sometimes the first step toward making a better health decision is simply understanding what you’re actually taking...agree?

Why does our body need omega-3?

One thing I’ve learned is that omega-3 isn’t just something we take because we’ve been told it’s “good for us.”
Omega-3 fatty acids are involved in some pretty fundamental things our bodies do.
EPA and DHA, in particular, become incorporated into cell membranes throughout the body. DHA is especially abundant in the brain and retina, while EPA and DHA are also involved in normal cardiovascular and immune functions.
That’s one reason fatty fish has been part of healthy diets for so long.
What I find interesting is that our bodies don’t manufacture enough of these fatty acids on their own to simply ignore our dietary intake. We need to get them from our food, and for some people, supplementation can be another way of increasing EPA and DHA intake.
I used to think about omega-3 mostly in terms of “How much am I taking?”
I’ve learned there are better questions to ask.
What am I actually getting?
Where is it coming from?
And what is my omega-3 status?
The more I learn, the more I realize that good nutrition isn't just about taking something.

Choosing a Quality Omega 3 Supplement...

Great breakdown of what actually makes fish oil "fresh." One thing I'd add: where you buy matters just as much as what's on the label. Marketplaces like eBay or Amazon third-party sellers can't guarantee cold-chain storage, correct expiry dates, or that the bottle hasn't been sitting in a hot warehouse for months — and counterfeit or relabeled stock is a real problem in the supplement space, with ingredients sometimes altered from what's actually listed. The cheapest price online is rarely the freshest oil. If a brand can't back up its TOTOX value and sourcing directly, it's not worth the risk to your health.

This is a great explanation from Dr. Rhonda Patrick on why omega-3 matters for our health.
One thing I’ve learned through my research is that simply taking omega-3 doesn’t necessarily tell you what your actual levels are. Testing can.
The Balance Test measures 11 fatty acids, including your Omega-3 Index and omega-6:3 ratio, giving you a much clearer picture of your fatty acid balance.
I really love the mindset of testing, not guessing. You get a starting point, make informed changes based on your results, and then test again to see whether those adjustments are truly making a difference. ❤️

One thing I’ve learned about spirulina is that it’s much more than just a source of protein. It’s packed with nutrients, minerals, antioxidants and other compounds that can support the body, especially when it’s under stress from exercise.
One of the interesting compounds in spirulina is phycocyanin, the blue pigment that gives spirulina its color. It has antioxidant properties and may help support the body’s recovery from exercise and oxidative stress.
I also like that the spirulina I take is grown in controlled, closed bioreactors. That helps with purity and consistency compared with spirulina grown in open ponds.
I’m not saying spirulina is some magic recovery supplement. I just think it’s an interesting whole-food nutrient source that can give the body a lot of nutritional support in a small amount.
You don’t know what you don’t know. That’s really why I like sharing things like this. ❤️

Kids will happily eat the same three meals on repeat, then change their minds entirely by Thursday. 💜

That is where an easy daily habit earns its place. BalanceOil Tutti Frutti was made for exactly that. Five things worth knowing, without the noise.

💧 Your body cannot produce EPA and DHA on its own. They come from food.

🐟 Small, short-lived fish do the heavy lifting. Anchovy, sardine and mackerel, wild-caught from waters certified by Friend of the Sea, and small, short-lived species accumulate less from the ocean than larger fish.

🧠 DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function and normal vision.¹

What Are We Really Feeding Our Children?

This image made me pause.
Not because I believe parents intentionally feed their children unhealthy food. Most parents are doing the best they can—often while juggling busy schedules, budgets, and convenience.
But today’s children are growing up in a very different food environment than previous generations.
Highly processed snacks.
Sugary drinks.
Refined carbohydrates.
Fast food.
Packaged foods designed for convenience—and often to keep us wanting more.
At the same time, many children may not be getting enough of the foods their growing bodies need: vegetables, fruits, whole grains, fiber, quality protein, and healthy fats.
This isn’t about saying a child can never have cookies, chips, or ice cream.
It’s about the overall pattern.
Nutrition is about more than calories. Growing bodies need the right building blocks for energy, development, brain health, digestion, and immune support.
This is not about perfection.
It is not about guilt.
And it is certainly not about blaming parents.
It’s about awareness.
Because when we better understand what our children are eating—and what they may be missing—we can make more informed choices, one meal and one snack at a time.
You don’t know what you don’t know.
Let’s keep learning—and supporting one another. ❤️
What is one simple food swap or habit that has helped your family eat better?
