I love creating with clients and seeing what emerges. (This is my piece not a client’s).A good reminder for me to take the time to play and explore without knowing where I’m headed.

It’s been a rough week. Feeling out of sorts, noticing my mind looping and heading towards worse case scenario thinking, and having a hard time pulling out of it.

Fall is always a bit harder for me—a painful anniversary echoed by the weather and darkness and fading of colors. My head knows that it is just a season but my heart and body need extra support, so I have been resting more, slowing down, taking walks, and reaching out to people who know just how to show up.

After I started feeling a little better yesterday I looked down and saw I was wearing two different shoes and had to laugh, which felt like good medicine too. What do you do to support yourself during those harder stretches and to let people and nature and your own body heal and recover? 🍃❤️‍🩹

On his first trip down an icy hill my son’s sled careened into a tree and I handled it in all the right ways—just kidding! I screamed, I slid on my butt to get to him, I played the tape of a skiing accident I had as a teenager in my mind. By the time I made it to him with little composure or grace he was chipping ice chunks with his gloved fingers and calmly telling me what happened. I was ready to leave because this is what I fear!! But I didn’t. I took the moment to let him be okay. To separate my experience from his and to take care of my own racing heart. He wasn’t ready to take another trip down on his sled but spent the better part of an hour smoothing the ice with his hands, using a paint brush to brush off snow, rolling on the hill and otherwise having a complete blast. Could we have bailed and gone home? Sure. Could we have missed some of the magic if I had whisked him away instead of giving us both time to settle and see what felt right?

Perfect reminder that there is always energy and movement and beauty just below the quiet and stillness of winter. We’ve been in a collective freeze for a long time and I am always looking for reminders of what’s ready to be seen and felt and noticed.

May you find hope and a sense of safety in your life right here and now. If you are a trauma survivor I know there is someone out there holding space for your healing and your joy, who is ready to see the goodness in you that you may not yet see in yourself.

Music and poetry were my first therapists, reflecting back to me the beauty and hurt and loneliness and connection of life, working it through in a way that didn't feel so effortful or frightening. A good poem can hold us, be a salve for our wounds, and push us towards bravery.

This one reminds me of the ways we are all connected...even in our loneliness, even in our suffering, maybe especially so. And how we belong to each other and to something much bigger. May you find your comfort, your connection, your something to ease your loneliness and to bring you tenderness.

Nothing Wants to Suffer
by Danusha Laméris

after Linda Hogan

Nothing wants to suffer. Not the wind
as it scrapes itself against the cliff. Not the cliff

being eaten, slowly, by the sea. The earth does not want
to suffer the rough tread of those who do not notice it.

The trees do not want to suffer the axe, nor see
their sisters felled by root rot, mildew, rust.

The coyote in its den. The puma stalking its prey.
These, too, want ease and a tender animal in the mouth

to take their hunger. An offering, one hopes,
made quickly, and without much suffering.

The chair mourns an angry sitter. The lamp, a scalded moth.
A table, the weight of years of argument.

We know this, though we forget.

Not the shark nor the tiger, fanged as they are.
Nor the worm, content in its windowless world

of soil and stone. Not the stone, resting in its riverbed.
The riverbed, gazing up at the stars.

Least of all, the stars, ensconced in their canopy,
looking down at all of us— their offspring—

scattered so far beyond reach.

30 days of gratitude Day 7: words This morning my son said to me, “I miss my old life,” and his words went straight to my heart and it got me thinking about the ways in which poetry and music and the words of a loved one have often been the best company during times of suffering and in joy. Have you ever felt loved and understood and safe by the just right words for the time? I am grateful for the way language helps bind us together and for the way that telling our stories brings connection and hope and peace. I am grateful to my son for sharing this moment in his story and for the way it helps me to come in closer. I am grateful for the stories clients share with me, the poets and the musicians who have held me when I was so alone, and for the way that telling our own truths sets all of us a little more free.

Confession time: I skipped day 3 of my gratitude challenge, when the word was “optimism.” Searching for optimism and reasons to be grateful for it felt beyond my reach that day. Was it because of the election? Covid? My own failings? I have been beating myself up a bit for it, and also trying to give myself the same guidance I give to others that the growth comes from the stretching, the searching, the sitting with the discomfort and seeing what comes next. So maybe my gratitude for optimism is the hope that I can keep growing and stretching and sitting with the discomfort of this time while soaking in the beauty and connection too. #
