Myth vs. Fact: Hearing Loss Only Affects Older Adults

When most people think of hearing loss, they picture an older adult. While hearing loss does become more common with age, it can affect people of all ages—including teenagers, young adults, and even children.

Factors such as noise exposure, genetics, illness, certain medications, and medical conditions can all contribute to hearing loss, regardless of age.

That's why it's important to pay attention to the signs of hearing difficulty and have your hearing checked if you notice changes. Hearing health is important at every stage of life, and early detection can make a big difference.

Dr. Meg had a patient come in with ear wax. And blood. The culprit? Keys.

Anything you stick in your ear either pushes the wax deeper or does damage. That patient proved both points at once.

Leave the wax removal to us. It's a lot less traumatic for everyone involved.

"Can Hearing Loss Be Reversed?"

Short answer from Dr. Meg: it depends on where the hearing loss is coming from.

If it's sensorineural, meaning the loss is in the inner ear, there's no reversing it. That covers most hearing loss.

Outer and middle ear causes are different. Fluid buildup, earwax blockage, a condition called otosclerosis. Those may be treatable with medication or surgery. If the inner ear loss is severe enough, a cochlear implant may also be worth exploring.
