As we begin hurricane season, now is the time to make a plan, gather supplies and prepare for severe weather before a storm is on the horizon.
Hurricanes and tropical systems can bring more than strong winds — flash flooding, power outages and dangerous road conditions can impact our communities even without a direct landfall.
Take time to review evacuation routes, discuss emergency plans with your family and ensure everyone knows what to do if severe weather develops.
Our team stays prepared for any emergency: christus.io/emergencycare.

In honor of Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we are celebrating saints like Saint Paul Miki, the Patron Saint of Japan and one of the first native Japanese Christians whose faith endured even in the face of persecution.

As a Jesuit seminarian and gifted preacher, Paul Miki boldly shared the Gospel at a time when Christianity was outlawed in Japan. In 1597, he and 25 companions were arrested and crucified for their faith. From the cross, Paul continued to preach, stating just before his death “After Christ’s example, I forgive my persecutors. I do not hate them. I ask God to have pity on all, and I hope my blood will fall on my fellow men as a fruitful rain.” His courage and unwavering trust in God helped sustain the Catholic faith in Japan for generations. St. Paul Miki reminds us that even in the most difficult moments, faith, mercy and hope can leave a lasting impact.

We were proud to host a community Lunch & Learn focused on stroke prevention, recognition and education.

Our Trauma Coordinator, Desiree Fairley, spoke with community members about the importance of recognizing stroke symptoms early and introduced the B.E.F.A.S.T. program as a simple way to remember the warning signs: Balance, Eyes, Face, Arms, Speech and Time. She emphasized that knowing the signs and acting quickly can help protect the health and lives of those around us.

As National Stroke Month is coming to an end, we encourage everyone to learn more about the disease so you can be prepared and B.E.F.A.S.T. throughout the year by visiting https://christus.io/stroke

According to Diabetes Educator Christina Zeledon, participants who benefit most from diabetes education include those newly diagnosed and those struggling to manage their blood sugar or A1C. Medical nutrition therapy is best suited for participants who are newly diagnosed with complex comorbidities or have difficulty managing their blood sugar or A1C. She says during their first visit, participants can expect to learn about the diabetes disease process, their medications, the ADA diabetes diet, the types of foods they can eat, and how to prevent and treat acute and chronic diabetes-related complications.

A dedicated committee of our local Children's Miracle Network (CMN) partners recently gathered to help determine how more than $380,000 raised in 2025 will support pediatric equipment, services and programs across our health system. ❤️ Teams from across our hospitals submitted funding requests and shared presentations, giving partners a firsthand look at the meaningful impact that CMN funding has on children and families throughout Southeast Texas. Because of the incredible support of our community, we are able to provide hope, healing and life-saving care to our youngest patients. Together, we’re making big change for all kids.

When it comes to a stroke, there are two kinds, says Stroke Coordinator Cord Tucker. The most common is an ischemic stroke, which happens when a blockage stops blood flow to brain tissue, while a hemorrhagic stroke occurs when bleeding creates pressure and damages the brain. Cord adds that some patients experience a transient ischemic attack or "mini stroke," and the warning signs can be recognized using B.E.F.A.S.T. While some strokes can be genetic, others involve modifiable risk factors like high cholesterol and high blood pressure that can be influenced through daily habits such as diet, exercise, and taking medications as prescribed. Since an average of 1.9 million brain cells are lost every minute during a stroke, Cord emphasizes the importance of seeking immediate medical care when noticing any symptoms.

This Memorial Day, we pay tribute to the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. As we gather with friends and family, we also take a moment to acknowledge those who never made it home with a prayer service and a Missing Man Table—an enduring symbol of remembrance.

In honor of Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we are celebrating saints like Saint Magdalene of Nagasaki. Born near Nagasaki, Japan, Magdalene endured the loss of her family to martyrdom, yet her faith only deepened. Magdalene taught catechism, sought alms for the poor, visited the sick and encouraged fellow Christians during intense persecution. After several spiritual leaders were martyred, she continued their mission and eventually surrendered herself to authorities in 1634 to strengthen the courage of others. She endured torture for 13 days before her martyrdom. Canonized in 1987, Saint Magdalene remains a powerful witness of courage, solidarity and unwavering love for Christ.
