When it comes to vascular disease, Vascular Surgeon Dr. Gulrez Mahmood says it can significantly impact a patient's quality of life, becoming life-threatening in some cases if left untreated. According to Dr. Mahmood, many patients delay care until vascular disease has become severe. By identifying problems early and providing advanced interventions, doctors can help save limbs, prevent amputations and treat conditions ranging from leg ulcers and chronic pain to arterial blockages and aneurysms.

This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Mammography Technologist Wendy Johnson reminds women that those at a higher-than-average risk of breast cancer may need to begin screening earlier or undergo additional testing. While annual screening mammograms typically begin at age 40, recommendations can vary based on personal and family history, genetic risk factors and other factors. She encourages women to stay current with their screening mammograms, despite busy schedules, as mammograms are relatively quick and early detection gives care teams a greater opportunity to identify and treat breast cancer at an earlier stage.

We had an incredible time at our Lunch and Learn, where Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Michael Trice discussed his scope of care for knee problems, focusing on innovative treatment options available to patients. Highlights included Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation (ACI), a specialized procedure that uses a patient's own healthy cartilage cells to repair damaged cartilage in the knee, with a second procedure used to help restore the cartilage surface. As the only physician in the area performing this type of procedure, we're grateful to Dr. Trice for sharing his expertise and bringing advanced treatment options to our patients and community. In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, we are celebrating saints like Saint Teresa de Jesus de Los Andes.

Born Juana Enriqueta Josefina Fernández Solar in Santiago, Chile, in 1900, Teresa is remembered as a joyful and devoted witness to Christ. Known by many as Juanita, she grew up in a faithful family and felt drawn to God from a young age.

At fourteen, she sensed a call to religious life, and in 1919 she entered the Discalced Carmelite monastery in Los Andes, receiving the name Teresa of Jesus. Though her time in Carmel was brief, her life was marked by prayer and generosity.

Teresa died in 1920 at age 19 after an intense illness. Canonized in 1993, she became the first Chilean saint and remains a powerful reminder that holiness is possible through faith, love and everyday devotion to God.

Friday night lights are about more than the game — they’re about community, teamwork and making sure our student-athletes have the support they need. That's why our Sports Medicine team was proud to be on the sidelines during the Memorial vs. Galveston Ball High game. Sports Medicine Physician Dr. Christopher Martin, along with CHRISTUS Athletic Trainer David Shaw and Memorial High School Athletic Trainer Nic Tanner, worked together throughout the evening to provide care and support for the athletes on the field. We’re grateful for the opportunity to partner with local schools and to help keep athletes safe and in the game.
