I like to repost this yearly as an SLP and a parent

Being quiet is totally fine!
Being quiet does not mean you need help with pragmatic language. Also liking unique things does not mean you need to be in a pragmatic language group. It’s okay to be quiet. It’s okay to not enjoy talking about non-preferred topics with people you don’t know. We can’t just assume because kids don’t like talking, that they need help with it.

We can, however, work on other things when there is a need! We can talk about perspective taking and non verbal cues. A lot of times I talk with my students about how to make sure their message was understood by the listener. That’s important. But it’s really not that important to work on four conversational turns about a non-preferred topic. Or initiating a conversation when you are quiet and don’t want to talk.
