In the play room, a pile of scarves doesn’t stay a pile of scarves for long. In a matter of minutes it becomes a cape, a cave, a river, a dragon’s wing. A child wraps one around their shoulders and suddenly they’re someone else or maybe more fully themselves.
That’s the magic of open-ended materials in play. There’s no right way to use a scarf. No instructions. No winning. Just imagination meeting fabric and taking off somewhere new. In many play based modalities we call this projective play. When a child puts something outside themselves (a scarf, a puppet, a sandtray figure) and uses it to explore something inside, magic happens! The distance the object creates is actually what makes it safe. It’s easier to say “the dragon is scared” than “I am scared.” And that’s okay. The dragon still gets heard. Scarves are one of many doorways into imagination.

What would your kiddo (or inner child) turn a pile of scarves into? 👇

This whimsical door in our outdoor therapy area got me thinking recently about the courage it takes to try something new.

Starting therapy can feel like opening a door you’ve never opened before. There’s often a pause. A hesitation. Maybe even a fear of what might be waiting on the other side.

Taking that first step into the unknown is incredibly brave — and we’ve got your back.

Adults often wait for children to be ready to “talk about it.” But for a child, the sand tray, the puppet, the story they’re creating — that is them talking about it.
Every block tower, every pretend game, every burst of imagination holds a story, a feeling, a question. It’s how they make sense of their world.
When we slow down and truly pay attention, we begin to understand what they’re expressing — without words.

Even small moments of intentional, undivided attention to your child’s play can make a profound difference, helping them feel seen, heard, and understood.
Let’s give their play the attention it deserves. 💛

The mental health crisis facing transgender and nonbinary youth is real — and the data is urgent.

According to The Trevor Project:

-46% of transgender and nonbinary young people seriously considered su***de in the past year

-26% attempted su***de annually

-72% of transgender students reported persistent sadness or hopelessness

-Transgender youth are 4–7x more likely to be diagnosed with depression than their cisgender peers

-1 in 3 LGBTQ+ youth said anti-LGBTQ+ legislation made their mental health poor most of the time
These numbers aren’t just statistics. They represent real young people.

But here’s what the research also tells us:
✨ Family support can bring mental health outcomes for trans youth in line with their peers
✨ Gender-affirming care is associated with a 60% lower risk of depression and 73% lower risk of self-harm and su***de
✨ Safe schools, pronoun respect, and affirming spaces all reduce su***de risk
The environment we create matters. The policies we allow matter. The way we show up for young people matters.

We had a BLAST at the ASOS 24th annual autism walk! We have said it before and we will say it again. Autism “awareness” is never enough. Autistic people are an important and deeply cherished part of our community. We need to continue to dismantle ableism in our environments so that neurodivergent people are afforded the same freedom as allistic folks. Autistic kids and grown ups deserve to feel seen and celebrated. We want to see ALL neurodivergent people THRIVE. 🌈

“Ahhhhh SO MANY WAYS. :) Some of the easiest ways I play on a daily basis look like this: finding a really cool stick at the park and pretending it’s a wand. Keeping little trinkets in my pockets and handing them out to strangers. Assembling little fairy houses outside and wondering which fairy house I would most like to live in. Finding the whimsy in every day allows for play to be the heartbeat of my life.” - Mick James
