The "Face on Mars" is a famous rock formation in the Cydonia region that became a global sensation after the Viking 1 orbiter captured an image of it on July 25, 1976. In the original low-resolution photograph, a combination of low sun angles and pixel "bit errors" created shadows that strikingly resembled a human face, complete with eyes, a nose, and a mouth. This led to decades of speculation about extraterrestrial monuments until the Mars Global Surveyor returned to the site in 2001 with much more advanced technology. Using its high-resolution camera, the Surveyor revealed that the "face" was actually a natural, eroded mesa roughly 1.5 kilometers across, proving that the earlier humanoid appearance was simply a product of pareidolia—the human brain's tendency to see familiar patterns in random shapes.
