It's that time of year again: new backpacks, new schedules, and a lot of extra weight on young shoulders.
A backpack that's too heavy or worn the wrong way can pull on the shoulders and neck, leading to slouching and muscle tension over time. A few easy habits can help:
Use both straps, not just one.
Keep the pack at or above waist level, not sagging low.
Aim for the backpack weighing no more than about 10-15% of your child's body weight.
Posture habits formed now can carry into adulthood, so it's worth paying attention early. If your child has been complaining of neck or back discomfort, a chiropractic evaluation can help you understand what's going on and what support might help.
