Barbara Ryder Murphy, a spirited nurse, entrepreneur, and devoted community volunteer whose warmth, resilience, and Southern hospitality touched communities across the United States and Canada, died February 24, 2026. She was 88.
Born January 29, 1938, in San Diego, California, Barbara moved with her family to Childersburg, Alabama, as a young child. She graduated from Childersburg High School and continued her education at King College in Bristol, Tennessee, where she brought her trademark energy to the cheerleading squad. She later transferred to the University of Alabama at Birmingham to study nursing, launching a career rooted in caring for others.
While attending Alabama, she met George Homer Murphy, Jr. They married and built a life that spanned decades, three children, and many cities. George's career prompted more than eight relocations across the Southeast, the Northeast, and into Canada. Wherever they landed, Barbara lived by a simple philosophy: "Bloom where you are planted." She built friendships, professional pursuits, and community in every place she called home.
Barbara's professional life reflected both adaptability and determination. In Dallas, Texas, she worked as a private operating room nurse for an ear, nose, and throat specialist. After the family moved to Atlanta, Georgia, she continued in surgical nursing, assisting a thoracic surgeon in private practice. Her skill, calm presence, and dedication earned the trust of colleagues and patients alike.
In Lake Forest, Illinois, Barbara embraced a new challenge, becoming a licensed real estate agent and building a successful career helping families find homes. A subsequent move to Montreal brought another chapter of service: she became active in the American Women's Club and was elected president of the American Women's Club of Montreal, strengthening community ties and supporting American families abroad.
After George's early retirement, the couple settled in Bedford, Virginia, near family. There, Barbara and her sister, Marilyn, founded Piece of Cake Catering. What began as a shared hobby grew into a thriving business serving Bedford, Lynchburg, and Roanoke-an outgrowth of Barbara's love of cooking, entertaining, and bringing people together.
Barbara is remembered as vibrant, fiercely independent, and full of "can-do" spirit. She delighted in hosting holiday celebrations and lively cocktail parties, loved driving her bright yellow MGB convertible with the top down, and treasured the companionship of her beloved Standard Poodles.
She was a member of Saint John's Episcopal Church in Bedford and belonged to The Order of the Daughters of the King, devoted to prayer, service, and evangelism. She believed deeply in positive thinking and daily prayer.
Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, George Homer Murphy, Jr.; her parents, Helen Vivian Pumphrey Ryder and Ward Henry Ryder; her sister, Marilyn Ryder Rowe; her father-in-law, George Homer Murphy; her mother-in-law, Bertha Smith Murphy; and brothers- and sisters-in-law Donald M. Rowe, Ronald R. Pate, Jack Hudson, Sr., Jo Dorris Hudson, and Linda Murphy Hatton.
She is survived by her daughter, Helen Murphy McGinnis; her sons, Ward Murphy and John Murphy; son-in-law James McGinnis; daughters-in-law Diane Murphy and Leigh Ann Murphy; grandchildren Carter Murphy, Staton Murphy, and Ryder Murphy; sisters-in-law Annie Murphy, Lola Fay Pate, and Sara Murphy; brother-in-law Ronnie Murphy; and 11 nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will take place at 10am on July 25th at Saint John's Episcopal Church in Bedford, VA.
