🏠For a stretch of years, the largest textile mill complex on earth was in Manchester, New Hampshire.
The Amoskeag Manufacturing Company built along both banks of the Merrimack for more than a mile, and the millyard eventually held around forty buildings put up between 1838 and 1915. All of it was designed by a single engineering firm, and all of it was built from the same warm red brick made at the company's own brickyard upriver in Hooksett. That is why the millyard reads as one enormous object rather than a collection of separate factories. It was meant to.
At the peak, Amoskeag employed roughly 17,000 people, and by 1915 it was turning out something like fifty miles of cloth an hour. The company did not just run mills. It built the housing, laid out streets, and shaped an entire city around itself, pulling in Irish, French Canadian, Greek and Polish families who came for the work and stayed for generations. Then the orders moved south, and in 1935 the company collapsed.
The buildings did not. After decades of half use and open doubt about whether any of it was worth saving, the millyard now holds software companies, restaurants, art studios, apartments, a college campus and a museum. You can eat lunch in a room where somebody's great grandmother tended looms twelve hours a day. ⚙️
Did anyone in your family work in the Amoskeag mills, or in one of the other mill cities up and down the Merrimack?
